Adani Energy Solutions Ltd (AESL) shares advanced as much as 2.58% to hit their 52-week high level of ₹1,205.70 on the NSE on Wednesday, April 15, following the company's key business update on Tuesday. According to reports from Upstox, the stock surge was driven by the commissioning of a significant power infrastructure project in Mumbai.
Adani Electricity Mumbai Infrastructure Limited (AEMIL), a subsidiary of Adani Energy Solutions Limited (AESL), commissioned a 1,000 megawatt (MW) high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission link between Kudus and Aarey on Tuesday, April 14, 2026. As reported by The Times of India, the project connects Kudus, a locality in Palghar district, with Aarey Milk Colony in Goregaon East, Mumbai. The company described this as a significant step towards strengthening power infrastructure in Mumbai and the wider Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).
The project comprises a 30-kilometre overhead line and a 50-kilometre underground corridor, designed to operate within the constraints of a densely built urban environment. According to The Times of India, it features the world's first compact HVDC substation and was powered by advanced Voltage Source Converter (VSC)-based HVDC technology. The link is among the largest urban HVDC infeeds globally and offers operational benefits including dynamic voltage support, reduced transmission losses over long distances, and black-start capability, enabling restoration of power without relying on an external source.
The additional 1,000 MW capacity helps reduce reliance on in-city generation, improves grid resilience, and lowers the risk of large-scale outages. As reported by The Times of India, the project was conceived in the aftermath of the October 2020 Mumbai blackout, which exposed vulnerabilities in the city's power supply. The link enables Mumbai and the MMR to draw more electricity from outside the city, including renewable energy generated in other regions, strengthening the city's energy security. According to The Times of India, the Kudus–Aarey link is expected to significantly increase the share of power sourced from outside Mumbai, easing pressure on in-city generation and strengthening grid resilience as demand continues to grow across the MMR.
Hitachi Energy partnered with Adani Energy Solutions Ltd (AESL) to commission the project, with Hitachi Energy India shares also hitting a 52-week high of ₹29,095 apiece on the NSE. According to Upstox, Kandarp Patel, CEO of AES, described it as one of the fastest HVDC projects ever commissioned, while N. Venu, managing director and CEO of Hitachi Energy India, expressed pride in the commissioning. As reported by The Times of India, Kandarp Patel emphasized that "With the commissioning of the Aarey–Kudus transmission line, Mumbai now has a modern power corridor capable of integrating large-scale renewable energy with high reliability. It is one of the fastest HVDC projects ever commissioned, which is powered by advanced VSC-based HVDC technology. The project enhances grid stability, decongests existing networks and strengthens the city's energy security."
