Uttar Pradesh's sugar production is expected to remain stagnant at approximately 9 million tonnes for the 2026-27 season (October 2026-September 2027), despite anticipated improvements in cane yields. According to reports from The Hindu BusinessLine, the state is projected to see a 10% boost in sugarcane yields, particularly across its western belt, but this gain will be offset by reduced acreage and an earlier crushing season start. Industry sources indicate that sugar mills' data shows cane acreage may be 1-2 lakh hectares lower this year compared to previous estimates.
Official data presents conflicting estimates of Uttar Pradesh's sugarcane acreage. As reported by The Hindu BusinessLine, the State government's provisional estimate stands at 28.13 lakh hectares against 28.61 lakh hectares a year ago. However, the Union Agriculture Ministry's data shows the state has 36,000 hectares higher area than the previous year's 28.02 lakh hectares. The current cane acreage will be available for crushing during the 2026-27 season as plants typically begin operations after Diwali.
The current sugar season (beginning October 2025) has significantly underperformed expectations. According to industry data reported by The Hindu BusinessLine, sugar production in Uttar Pradesh did not exceed 8.95 million tonnes, falling short of the initial July 2025 projection of 10.25 million tonnes from an estimated area of 22.57 lakh hectares. Industry sources attribute this gap to discrepancies between government and private sector cane area estimates, with the latter typically being more accurate.
Recent weather patterns have significantly benefited sugarcane cultivation across Uttar Pradesh. As reported by The Hindu BusinessLine, east Uttar Pradesh (42 districts) has received 85% surplus rain in the past fortnight (August 26-September 8), while the western region (33 districts) has seen 80% surplus rain in the past 15 days. However, farmers face challenges with recovery rates, as mills in Uttar Pradesh achieve only 10.19% recovery from one quintal of cane crushed, with current government rates of ₹400 per quintal considered low by industry standards.
The global sugar market is experiencing significant supply constraints that could impact Uttar Pradesh's production outlook. According to recent market analysis, Thailand's sugar production may fall at least 17% in 2026-27 amid El Niño conditions, with output likely under 10 million tons compared to the previous season's 12 million tons. The International Sugar Organization projects a worldwide deficit of about 260,000 tons for the coming season, attributing it to El Niño's impact on Asian crops. Futures in New York have climbed more than 20% last month, the biggest monthly surge since 2010, driven by thinner Thai supply and globally tighter balance. The FAO Sugar Price Index averaged 106.4 points in August, up 11.9% from July and the highest since June 2025.
