
The National Stock Exchange of India (NSE) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Bharat Metal Exchange Ltd. (BME), formerly known as Bombay Metal Exchange Ltd., to promote the development, awareness and adoption of non-ferrous metal derivatives in India. According to reports from The Economic Times, this collaboration combines NSE's derivatives market infrastructure with BME's industry expertise and extensive network across the non-ferrous metals trade and industry ecosystem. BME brings a history spanning more than nine decades in the metals sector. The MoU was signed by Mr. Sushil Kothari, President – BME, on behalf of BME, as reported by The Economic Times. Through the partnership, NSE's derivatives market infrastructure will be combined with BME's industry expertise and engagement with participants in the physical non-ferrous metals market.
The partnership aims to increase market participation, strengthen price risk management practices and support the development of hedging tools for stakeholders across the non-ferrous metals value chain. As reported by The Economic Times, India is among the world's largest consumers of industrial metals such as copper, aluminium, zinc, lead and nickel. With domestic manufacturing activity, infrastructure development, renewable energy investments and electric mobility continuing to expand, demand for mechanisms to manage commodity price volatility has also increased significantly. The collaboration reflects the shared commitment of NSE and BME to support the growth of India's commodity markets and provide market participants with efficient, transparent, and robust risk management solutions. NSE and BME noted that the growing demand from manufacturing, infrastructure, renewable energy and electric mobility sectors is increasing the need for transparent and efficient mechanisms to manage commodity price volatility.
Under the agreement, NSE and BME will work together on developing products in the non-ferrous metals segment and undertake initiatives to create awareness around price risk management through exchange-traded non-ferrous metal derivatives. According to The Economic Times, the two organisations will engage with a broad set of stakeholders, including producers, consumers, processors, traders, importers, exporters, industry associations and financial market participants to encourage wider adoption of exchange-based risk management solutions. The partnership will also jointly conduct industry outreach programmes focused on the role of non-ferrous metal derivatives in managing price risks. As part of the collaboration, NSE and BME will jointly undertake industry outreach initiatives to enhance awareness of non-ferrous metal derivatives and their role in effective price risk management. The organisations will work on developing new products in the non-ferrous metals segment and promote awareness of exchange-traded derivatives as risk management tools.
