India's automobile market is experiencing a comprehensive shift in fuel preferences, with electric vehicles gaining ground across all vehicle segments including passenger vehicles, two-wheelers, three-wheelers and commercial vehicles. According to analysis by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (Fada), this transition represents a fundamental change in the country's automotive fuel landscape. The shift is particularly pronounced in the passenger vehicle segment, where petrol/ethanol's share of retail sales fell from 47.49 per cent in January to 40.85 per cent in August, while CNG/LPG increased from 22.91 per cent to 25.28 per cent during the same period.
Electric vehicle adoption has shown remarkable acceleration across all vehicle categories. In the passenger vehicle segment, EV penetration more than doubled from 3.6 per cent to 7.63 per cent over the January to August period. By August, CNG, hybrid and EVs together accounted for 41.95 per cent of PV retail sales, overtaking petrol/ethanol for the first time. The electric two-wheeler segment demonstrated even stronger growth, with share increasing from 6.63 per cent in January to 10.68 per cent in August. In the three-wheeler category, EV penetration rose from 59.60 per cent in January to 65.30 per cent in August, while CNG/LPG's share declined during this period.
The India EV charging station market was valued at USD 589.1 million in 2025, driven by accelerating EV adoption, FAME II and PM e-DRIVE policy support, and fleet electrification demand. According to IMARC Group analysis, the market is projected to reach USD 1,078.8 million by 2034, growing at a CAGR of 6.82% during 2026-2034. Commercial applications command a dominant 79.2% share in 2025, driven by fleet electrification commitments from logistics operators, ride-hailing platforms, and e-commerce delivery companies. DC Charging dominates the charging station type segment with a 63.7% share, while Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) leads the vehicle type segment with a 75.1% share.
According to Fada's analysis, the fuel shift is attributed to running-cost economics and consumer concerns around the transition to E20 fuel. The data reveals that CNG/LPG together accounted for 25.28 per cent of PV retail sales in August, while the combination of CNG, hybrid and EVs reached 41.95 per cent of total PV retail sales. This shift represents a significant milestone as it marks the first time that alternative fuel vehicles have collectively surpassed traditional petrol/ethanol sales in the passenger vehicle segment. Key growth factors driving the EV charging market include rising EV adoption across two- and three-wheelers, declining EVSE hardware costs, and domestic manufacturing growth.
