Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL) has implemented a ₹1 per kg increase in CNG prices for Mumbai and surrounding suburbs effective October 31, 2026, bringing rates to ₹90 per kg. According to latest reports, this marks the fifth increase this year and represents the latest in a series of hikes that began with a ₹1 increase on April 12. The company attributed the latest increase to higher input gas costs, including imported regasified liquefied natural gas (RLNG), whose prices are linked to international gas indices. MGL stated that the rise in international gas prices has pushed up its cost of sourcing gas, necessitating the price adjustment.
The price increase significantly affects Mumbai's transportation sector, where 4.7 lakh autorickshaw drivers, 1.6 lakh taxi drivers, and 5 lakh private car owners rely on CNG. As reported by Times of India, Thampi Kurien, president of an auto-rickshaw union, warned that the latest increase has added burden on operating costs. The overall additional burden is around 16 paise per kilometre, while the earlier calculation was around 66 paise per kilometre. Kurien indicated that with the increase in CNG prices, there is an estimated impact of around ₹4 on fares. He added that if CNG prices rise further and result in a 25 per cent increase in overall operating costs, the union may seek a fare revision within six months, subject to certain conditions.
According to Goodreturns, CNG prices have been increased across multiple cities including Bangalore, Bharatpur, Dewas, Meerut, Sonipat, and Firozabad by ₹1 per kg. In Bangalore, Bharatpur, and Dewas, CNG prices now stand at ₹99 per kg each. Meerut and Sonipat have seen increases to ₹96.50 and ₹99.90 per kg respectively. CNG prices remain unchanged in Delhi at ₹86.98 per kg, Chennai at ₹99.50 per kg, and Rewari at ₹91.59 per kg. The latest revision takes the price of CNG to ₹90 per kg in Mumbai and adjoining areas.
Despite the CNG hike, PNG rates remained unchanged across most cities in November 2026. As reported by Goodreturns, PNG prices vary significantly across regions, with cities like Chandigarh, Lucknow, and Hyderabad charging the highest at ₹57.48, ₹56.50, and ₹56 per SCM respectively. Delhi PNG is priced at ₹49.60 per SCM, while Mumbai and Chennai both charge ₹52 per SCM. The stability in PNG rates comes despite LPG prices increasing by ₹10 to ₹17 per cylinder across cities.
