CME Group has announced plans to introduce 24/7 trading for new 10-Barrel WTI Crude Oil futures and expand trading hours for its 1-Ounce Gold futures contract to 24/7 trading, subject to regulatory approval. According to reports from CNBC TV18 and PR Newswire, the new crude oil contract is scheduled to launch on August 30, while round-the-clock trading for the existing gold futures contract is expected to begin on July 26. Both contracts will be available for continuous trading throughout the week, allowing traders to respond to market-moving events as they occur across global time zones. The 10-Barrel WTI contract will be one-hundredth the size of its existing Micro WTI futures contract and will be cash-settled and listed on the New York Mercantile Exchange (NYMEX), while the 1-Ounce Gold futures contract is cash-settled and listed on the Commodity Exchange (COMEX), both operating under CME Group. The launch is pending regulatory review, which is standard procedure for new futures products.
WTI crude oil serves as a widely used benchmark for global oil pricing and risk management, with CME Group reporting average daily volume in WTI Crude Oil options reached a record 320,000 contracts during the first quarter of 2026. As reported by CNBC TV18 and PR Newswire, average daily volume in Micro WTI Crude Oil futures rose to 2,72,000 contracts in May, up 317% from a year earlier. In precious metals, CME Group's benchmark gold futures market recorded approximately $100 billion in notional trading volume per day in 2025. The exchange's cash-settled 1-Ounce Gold futures contract, launched in January 2025, has traded an average of 90,000 contracts per day in 2026. These strong volume metrics demonstrate the growing demand for regulated commodity trading products across global markets.
The new contracts introduce significant operational improvements for continuous trading. The 10-Barrel WTI futures will trade continuously on Globex with a two-minute daily maintenance window and a two-hour Saturday window, making it the first energy product available for continuous 24/7 trading. The 1-Ounce Gold futures contract is 1/10th the size of Micro Gold futures and 1/100th of a standard Gold contract, offering exposure tied closely to spot gold prices with capital efficiency of roughly 13 to 1 based on current margin levels. CME executive Derek Sammann stated that traders are increasingly seeking to diversify across commodities amid geopolitical uncertainty, with right-sized, round-the-clock products designed to let participants react as news breaks. The 10-barrel contract size addresses a specific gap in the existing product offering, reducing notional exposure by 99% at current WTI prices, enabling participants with modest physical commodity exposure to access meaningful coverage without over-committing capital.
According to CNBC TV18 and PR Newswire, Derek Sammann, Senior Managing Director and Global Head of Commodities Markets at CME Group, stated that traders are increasingly looking to diversify their portfolios across commodity markets in the face of geopolitical uncertainty. The new contracts are designed to provide continuous access to regulated commodity markets, with the smaller crude oil contract offering market participants greater flexibility in managing exposure to oil price movements. As Sammann explained, "Our new WTI and Gold futures provide regulated products that are right-sized and available 24/7, ensuring traders can manage exposure whenever news breaks." The expansion builds on CME's multi-asset growth theme, following earlier launches in crypto and volatility futures, targeting more precise hedging and continuous price discovery across global markets. For institutional traders, smaller contracts offer more granular hedging capabilities, with the 10-barrel contract providing one-hundredth the size of standard contracts, giving more precision for fine-tuning energy exposure in portfolios. The announcement has received positive market reception, with CME Group gaining 3.07% while key peers showed mixed performance, indicating investor confidence in CME's strategic expansion into 24/7 commodity trading.
