The Reserve Bank of India announced that 98.45% of ₹2,000 banknotes have been returned since their withdrawal from circulation. According to reports from The Hindu BusinessLine, the central bank made this announcement on Wednesday, highlighting the successful completion of the withdrawal process that began in May 2023.
The total value of ₹2,000 banknotes in circulation has experienced a dramatic reduction since the withdrawal announcement. As reported by The Hindu BusinessLine, the value dropped from ₹3.56 lakh crore at the close of business on May 19, 2023, to ₹5,501 crore at the close of business on March 31, 2026. This represents a substantial decline in the denomination's presence in the banking system.
The RBI has established multiple channels for exchanging the withdrawn currency notes. According to the central bank's release, a facility for exchanging ₹2,000 banknotes is available at the 19 issue offices of the Reserve Bank since May 19, 2023. Additionally, from October 9, 2023, RBI issue offices began accepting ₹2,000 banknotes from individuals and entities for deposit into their bank accounts.
The public can also exchange ₹2,000 banknotes through India Post services. As reported by The Hindu BusinessLine, members of the public are sending ₹2,000 banknotes through India Post from any post office within the country to any of the RBI issue offices for credit to their bank accounts. This system provides additional convenience for note holders across the country.
Despite the withdrawal, ₹2,000 banknotes continue to maintain their legal tender status. According to the RBI's statement, the central bank confirmed that ₹2,000 banknotes continue to be legal tender, ensuring that holders can still use them for transactions where accepted by merchants.
