According to latest reports from The Economic Times, HDFC Bank has extended its work-from-home policy for an additional 30 days beyond the initial implementation period. The bank's work-from-home arrangement of up to two days a week for employees in Business Enabling Functions and Corporate Enabling Functions continues to operate with immediate effect. The policy now covers Business Enabling Functions including treasury operations, credit underwriting and risk, transaction banking, digital banking, and IT services, as well as Corporate Enabling Functions covering human resources, finance and accounts, legal and compliance, and secretarial and board functions.
As reported by The Economic Times, this decision aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's appeal to citizens and corporations to adopt work-from-home and virtual meetings to conserve fuel amid rising crude oil prices. The bank emphasizes that all branches and customer-facing touchpoints will continue to operate as normal, ensuring uninterrupted service delivery to customers. The policy extension comes as the Delhi government urges private firms to embrace two-day work-from-home arrangements, with companies also adjusting office timings and promoting carpooling to support the government's fuel conservation directive. The initiative supports Prime Minister Modi's call for wise resource expenditure and aims to reduce daily vehicular fuel consumption in the capital.
According to The Economic Times, HDFC Bank employs over 2,00,000 people across the country, making this policy implementation significant for the banking sector. The bank joins a small but growing list of private sector lenders formalising hybrid work arrangements, with IndusInd Bank recently rolling out a hybrid work model for a section of its employees, while Axis Bank has maintained a hybrid model for non-customer-facing roles since FY21, requiring staff to come into office two days a week. This trend reflects how Indian enterprises are reshaping their spending habits, with non-essential travel and expenses being minimized while remote work and energy conservation practices gain traction. The shift resonates with broader national efforts towards sustainable consumption and maintaining operational robustness amid global uncertainties.
In a separate development, HDFC Bank has introduced double OTP system for senior citizens in Gurugram and Faridabad to enhance security for their bank accounts. This voluntary facility ensures money transfers only occur after verification from both the account holder and a trusted contact, specifically designed to protect individuals over 60 from cybercrimes and financial losses. This initiative supports broader national efforts towards wise resource expenditure and reducing daily vehicular fuel consumption in the capital.
