Banks across India are closed today, June 13, 2026, as it falls on the second Saturday of the month, which is a bank holiday. According to reports from Mint, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has listed a total of eleven holidays this month, including weekend holidays for second Saturday, fourth Saturday, and all Sundays. While some bank holidays are specific to certain states or regions, branches across the country will remain closed on gazetted national holidays. The comprehensive banking holiday calendar covers holidays under 'Negotiable Instruments Act' and 'Banks' Closing of Accounts' designations.
Banks in India are experiencing a three-day consecutive holiday weekend from June 13th to June 15th, creating significant operational disruptions. As per Goodreturns, this extended closure is due to the unique combination of second Saturday, Sunday, and special holiday for Raja Sankranti and YMA Day on June 15th. The second Saturday rule mandates closure on the second and fourth Saturdays of every month, with the last fifth Saturday serving as a working day if there are five Saturdays in a month. All major banks including SBI, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Axis Bank, IndusInd Bank, Punjab National Bank (PNB) and Bank of Baroda are closed today, with the rule applying to all scheduled and non-scheduled banks regardless of ownership type.
In RBI's holiday calendar, certain days are marked as non-working days for banks under 'Negotiable Instruments Act' and 'Banks' Closing of Accounts' designations. The complete list of holidays in June 2026 includes: 15 June - Banks closed in Aizawl (YMA founding) and Bhubaneswar (Raja Sankranti); 25 June - Banks closed in Vijayawada (Moharrum); 26 June - Bank operations shut in multiple cities including Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, and Kolkata (Muharrum); 29 June - Banks closed in Shimla (Sant Guru Kabir Jayanti); and 30 June - Banks closed in Aizawl (Remna Ni regional holiday).
According to RBI guidelines, payment systems will not be operational on second and fourth Saturdays but will operate for a full day on working Saturdays. These payment systems typically include Real Time Gross Settlement (RTGS), National Electronic Fund Transfer (NEFT), and Cheque Clearing operated by various Bankers' Clearing Houses, including the grid-based Cheque Truncation System (CTS) and ECS suite. Processing of future value-dated transactions with value date falling on second and fourth Saturdays will not be undertaken under RTGS and ECS suites. While UPI and respective bank apps remain operational for payments and money transfers, other digital banking services may face restrictions during these holiday periods.
