Banks across several states will remain closed between July 6 and July 12 due to regional festivals, commemorative observances, and regular weekend breaks, according to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) calendar. The closures are issued under the Negotiable Instruments Act, which governs banking transactions such as cheque clearing and promissory notes. Unlike national holidays, many bank holidays are observed only in specific states depending on local festivals and events, meaning bank branches in one state may remain open while those in another stay closed on the same day. As per The Times of India, the RBI has listed a total of 12 days in July on occasion of various national, regional, and religious holidays, including the weekends off for second Saturday, fourth Saturday, and all Sundays during the month.
July 6 (Monday): Banks will remain closed in Aizawl, Mizoram for Mizo Hmeichhe Insuihkhawm Pawl (MHIP) Day, while Kolkata, West Bengal will be closed to mark the Birth Anniversary of Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee. MHIP Day celebrates one of the largest women's organisations in Mizoram, which contributes towards women's welfare, education, social reform and community development in the state. Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee was an educationist, lawyer and politician who served as India's first Minister for Industry and Supply after Independence, and founded the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, the party that later evolved into the BJP. July 9 (Thursday): Banks will remain closed in Shillong for Beh Deinkhlam. July 16 (Thursday): Banks will remain closed in Bhubaneswar, Dehradun and Imphal for Ratha Yatra/Kang celebrations. July 17 (Friday): Banks in Shillong will remain closed to mark the Death Anniversary of U Tirot Singh. July 18 (Saturday): Banks in Gangtok will observe Drukpa Tshe-zi. July 22 (Wednesday): Banks in Agartala will remain closed for Kharchi Puja. Notably, while some bank holidays are specific to certain states or regions, branches across all public and private sector banks in the country are mandated to shut operations on Gazetted national holidays, as reported by The Times of India and NDTV Profit.
The RBI mandates all scheduled and non-scheduled banks to observe closure on all Sundays and the second and fourth Saturdays in a month, ensuring customers cannot access in-branch services on these days. According to The Times of India, the weekend holidays in July 2026 include four Sunday holidays on July 5, 12, 19, and 26, along with second Saturday holiday on July 11 and fourth Saturday holiday on July 25. Additionally, certain regional holidays are scheduled throughout July, including July 16 for Ratha Yatra/Kang celebrations in Bhubaneswar, Dehradun, and Imphal, July 17 for U Tirot Singh's death anniversary in Shillong, July 18 for Drukpa Tshe-zi in Gangtok, and July 22 for Kharchi Puja in Agartala.
Despite branch closures, customers can continue using digital banking platforms without interruption. Services such as internet banking, mobile banking, Unified Payments Interface (UPI) transactions, ATM withdrawals and cash deposits at self-service kiosks will continue to operate unless banks issue a separate advisory. As per The Times of India and NDTV Profit, UPI and bank apps allow 24/7 transactions that work round the clock, whether banks are open or not, though they may be down during scheduled maintenance. Additionally, fund transfer requests can be made using NEFT/RTGS transfer forms, demand draft request forms and chequebook forms, while credit cards, debit cards, and ATM cards can be obtained through card services. Services such as account maintenance forms, setting up standing instructions, and applying for a locker are also open during bank holidays.
