Public and private banks across India are closed today, 26 June, for Muharram holiday, according to the Reserve Bank of India's holiday calendar. This follows the RBI's official guidelines that mandate closure on all second and fourth Saturdays, along with every Sunday of the month. The closure creates a 3-day banking holiday period from 26-28 June, with banks remaining closed on the fourth Saturday (June 27) and Sunday (June 28).
Banks are closed in several states on 26 June for Muharram, with specific closures varying by region. As reported by Angel One, bank branches will remain closed today in the following states and union territories: Agartala, Aizawl, Belapur, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Chennai, Hyderabad, Jammu, Kanpur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, New Delhi, Patna, Raipur, Ranchi and Srinagar. However, banking operations continue as usual in several states including Shillong, Imphal, Bhubaneswar, Dehradun, Gangtok, and Agartala. Customers in affected regions may not be able to access branch-based banking services, while those in operating states can visit branches during regular working hours.
Despite branch closures, online banking services remain operational across the country to ensure uninterrupted access to banking services. As reported by Angel One, customers can continue using UPI, internet banking, and ATMs throughout the holiday period. These services operate normally and remain available for payments, fund transfers through NEFT/RTGS, and card services including account maintenance and locker applications. The services operate round-the-clock whether banks are open or not, though they may be temporarily down due to scheduled maintenance.
This closure is part of a longer holiday period that began on Thursday 25 June with Muharram holiday in Vijayawada. Following Muharram, some states will observe additional regional holidays: June 29, 2026 | Sant Guru Kabir Jayanti | Himachal Pradesh and June 30, 2026 | Remna Ni | Mizoram. Customers are advised to plan branch visits and complete important banking work in advance, as many regions will experience the 3-day closure period from 26-28 June.
The Reserve Bank of India has released the comprehensive bank holiday schedule for July 2026, covering regional festivals and standard non-working days. According to Outlook Business, banks in Aizawl will be closed on July 6 for MHIP Day, while Shillong will observe Beh Deinkhlam on July 9. The major closure will occur on July 16 when banks in Bhubaneswar, Dehradun, Imphal and Shillong will be closed for Ratha Yatra, Kang Rathajatra and Harela. Additional regional closures include Gangtok on July 18 for Drukpa Tshe-zi and Agartala on July 22 for Kharchi Pujababa. All Sundays in July will remain closed, including July 5, 12, 19 and 26, along with the second Saturday (July 11) and fourth Saturday (July 25).
