Private and public sector banks in India will remain closed for only one day in the upcoming week between 29 June and 5 July, 2026. According to reports from Mint, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has listed a total of eleven holidays in June and 12 days in July due to national, regional, and religious holidays. This includes weekend holidays for second Saturday, fourth Saturday, and all Sundays. The week of June 29 to July 5, 2026 is described as one of the lightest bank-holiday weeks of the year, with branches staying open across almost the whole country. Only Shimla (June 29) and Aizawl (June 30) will be closed during this period.
Banks remained closed on Friday, June 27, 2026 due to Muharram celebrations, creating additional disruption for customers with pending banking work. As reported by ETWealth, many customers are now wondering whether banks will remain shut today (Saturday, June 27, 2026) as well, making it important to check local branch holiday schedules before visiting. While many transactions can be completed online, several other services such as cash deposits, cheque clearance, account-related work and other banking services may still require branch visits, making physical branch availability crucial for customers with immediate banking needs.
In RBI's holiday calendar, certain days are marked as non-working days for banks under 'Negotiable Instruments Act' and other under 'Banks' Closing of Accounts.' As reported by Mint, the full list of holidays in July 2026 includes: July 6: Banks closed in Aizwal for MHIP Day; July 9: Banks closed in Shillong for Beh Deinkhlam; July 16: Banks closed in Bhubaneswar, Dehradun, Imphal for Ratha Yatra/Kang (Rathajatra)/Harela; July 17: Banks closed in Shillong to observe Death Anniversary of U Tirot Singh; July 18: Banks closed in Gangtok to observe Drukpa Tshe-zi; and July 22: Banks closed in Agartala to observe Kharchi Puja.
Under RBI guidelines, all scheduled and non-scheduled banks observe mandatory closure on all second and fourth Saturdays, as well as every Sunday of the month. According to Mint, there are four Sundays in July, so banks will remain closed on 5, 12, 19 and 26 July. In addition to Sundays, banks will be closed on 11 July (second Saturday) and 25 July (fourth Saturday). However, July 4 (first Saturday) is a normal working day, as RBI rules specify that only second and fourth Saturdays are closed, while first, third and fifth Saturdays remain normal working days. Customers are advised to check with their local bank branches for exact holiday applicability, while essential banking services remain operational nationwide during physical branch closures.
During bank holidays, online banking services remain available across the country to ensure uninterrupted access to banking services. As reported by Mint, customers can use UPI or respective bank apps to make payments and receive money from others, with these services working round the clock. Fund transfer requests can be made using NEFT/RTGS transfer forms, demand draft request forms and chequebook forms. Additionally, credit cards, debit cards, and ATM cards can be obtained through card services, while services such as account maintenance forms, setting up standing instructions, and applying for lockers remain open. However, bank holidays only shut the branch counter, with everything digital continuing to operate normally. Over-the-counter cash, demand drafts, locker access, passbook updates, or submitting paper forms cannot be processed on closed days.
