Banks across all states will remain completely closed on May 1, 2026, marking the simultaneous observance of Buddha Purnima and Labour Day (May Day). According to the latest RBI holiday calendar, this Friday closure is confirmed across public and private sector banks nationwide. The closure stems from the unique combination of religious and labour observances, with Buddha Purnima commemorating the birth, enlightenment, and Nirvana of Lord Gautama Buddha and Labour Day honouring worker contributions and rights. Additionally, Maharashtra Day is celebrated on May 1st, which commemorates the formation of the state following the bifurcation of Bombay State in 1960, while the birth anniversary of Pandit Raghunath Murmu is also observed around this time.
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) holiday calendar reveals that bank closures today are not uniform across the country. As reported by ABP Live, the RBI releases its annual holiday list taking into account both national and regional observances, excluding routine closures such as second and fourth Saturdays. The calendar shows that banks are closed in 27 cities including major metros like Mumbai, New Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, and Bengaluru, while branches remain open in select cities such as Ahmedabad, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Jaipur, Kohima and Shillong. According to the latest reports, banks are scheduled to remain closed in various states, including Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and West Bengal on May 1st.
According to the RBI holiday calendar, May 2026 includes multiple bank holidays beyond May 1. Key dates include May 3: Nationwide Sunday holiday, May 9: Second Saturday + Rabindranath Tagore Jayanti (nationwide closure in West Bengal), May 10: Weekly Sunday holiday, May 16: State Day in certain states, May 17: Nationwide Sunday holiday, May 23: Fourth Saturday (nationwide closure), May 24: Weekly Sunday holiday, May 26: Kazi Nazrul Islam Jayanti, May 27: Bakrid (Eid-ul-Adha), May 28: Bakrid (in some states), and May 31: Nationwide Sunday holiday. Additionally, banks will remain closed on all Sundays: May 3, 10, 17, 24 and 31.
Despite physical branch closures, customers can continue accessing banking services through digital channels. As reported by ABP Live, online banking, mobile apps, ATM services and UPI transactions will remain fully operational, except in rare cases of scheduled maintenance. According to the latest reports, during these holidays, customers will continue to have access to UPI, mobile banking, internet banking, and ATM services. However, bank branches will remain closed during the holidays, consequently services such as cheque clearance, cash deposits, and withdrawals will not be available, and passbooks will not be updated. This digital access ensures customers can perform essential banking functions even when physical branches are closed, providing continuity during the holiday period.
According to ABP Live, customers are advised to check the RBI's city-wise holiday list before planning a visit to their nearest branch. The variation in bank closures across cities means that Labour Day is not recognised as a bank holiday uniformly across all states, creating regional differences in operational status. The stock market (NSE and BSE) will also remain closed during the month of May, meaning no trading will take place. This proactive approach can help avoid inconvenience, especially during a month packed with multiple public holidays, and customers are advised to plan ahead by keeping these holidays in mind for any urgent banking matters.
