Banks in Tripura are scheduled to remain closed today, May 26, for the birth anniversary of Kazi Nazrul Islam, according to the Reserve Bank of India's holiday calendar for fiscal year 2026-27. As reported by RBI, this regional holiday will not affect banking operations across the rest of the country, which will continue to operate as usual. All public and private sector bank branches operating in Tripura will observe the holiday, with customers advised to complete their banking work in advance to avoid inconvenience. The holiday applies to all banking operations in the state, ensuring comprehensive closure of financial services during this period.
The closure applies specifically to banks in Agartala, Ahmedabad, Aizawl, Bhopal, Chandigarh, Dehradun, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Imphal, Jammu, Kanpur, Kochi, Kohima, Kolkata, Lucknow, New Delhi, Raipur, Ranchi, Shillong, Shimla, Srinagar, Thiruvananthapuram and Vijayawada. According to RBI's calendar, these cities will observe the holiday alongside Tripura. Kazi Nazrul Islam was a prominent Bengali poet, lyricist, journalist, and musician known for his revolutionary writings on social justice, human rights, resistance, and equality. Popularly known as the 'Rebel Poet,' he is widely celebrated for his contributions to Bengali literature, music and India's freedom movement. His birth anniversary is observed in several eastern states with cultural and literary events, making this a significant regional observance.
The biggest closure of the week affects May 27, covering centers across Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Telangana, West Bengal, Assam, Kerala, and other states due to Eid al-Adha celebrations. This closure covers the bulk of northern, eastern, and parts of southern India, making Wednesday effectively a write-off for any branch-dependent work. Bihar, Goa, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu will observe the holiday on May 28 instead. Jammu and Kashmir will see closures on both days. Since Eid-ul-Adha follows the Islamic lunar calendar, the exact date can shift by a day depending on the moon sighting, with customers advised to confirm with their nearest branch closer to the date. The comprehensive closure creates four non-working days for many bank branches across India during this week.
May 27: Banks will be closed in Tripura, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Chandigarh, Uttarakhand, Assam, Andhra Pradesh, Manipur, Jammu, Kerala, Nagaland, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Meghalaya, Himachal Pradesh and Srinagar. May 28: Banks will be closed in Mizoram, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, Jammu, Goa, Meghalaya and Bihar. The central government has announced that all administrative offices located in Delhi will be closed on May 28 instead of May 27, following similar decisions by the Telangana government. As bank holidays vary from state to state, customers are advised to check the holiday schedule applicable in their respective states before planning branch visits or important banking transactions.
Despite the bank holiday, banks offer online banking services to customers across the country to ensure uninterrupted access to banking services for convenient financial transactions. According to RBI's guidelines, this digital access allows customers to maintain their banking needs during holiday periods without visiting physical branches. Customers will continue to have access to digital banking services, including internet banking, mobile banking, ATM withdrawals and UPI-based transactions during the closure. UPI payments, as well as NEFT, RTGS and IMPS fund transfers, remain available round the clock, including on public holidays and Sundays. ATMs continue to function for cash withdrawals, balance checks and mini statements, while bank mobile apps and internet banking portals can be used to view account statements, download documents, and manage standing instructions. Certain services are only available in person and will not be accessible on holidays, including depositing cash or cheques at the counter, requesting a demand draft, accessing a bank locker and completing in-person KYC verification.
Banks across India are scheduled to remain closed for a total of 12 days in May 2026. The comprehensive holiday schedule includes May 1 (Maharashtra Day, Buddha Pournima, May Day (Labour Day), and the birth anniversary of Pandit Raghunath Murmu), May 9 (West Bengal - Rabindranath Tagore's birth anniversary), May 16 (Sikkim State Day), May 23 (fourth Saturday), May 26 (Tripura - Kazi Nazrul Islam's birth anniversary), May 27 (Eid-UI-Adha-(Bakri-Eid)/Id-ul-Zuha), May 28 (Bakri Eid in select states), and May 31 (Sunday weekly off). Additionally, May 3, 10, 17, 24, and 30 are Sundays, which serve as holidays for banks across India. May 30 is the fifth Saturday of the month, which means banks will remain open under RBI guidelines, while May 29 (Friday) and May 30 (Saturday) are clear working days across most of the country.
