OpenAI has secured a massive $110 billion funding round, valuing the ChatGPT maker at $730 billion, as the artificial intelligence company accelerates investments to meet rapidly expanding global demand for AI services. According to reports from The Times of India, the investment represents one of the largest fundraising rounds in Silicon Valley history. The funding includes $30 billion each from Japanese conglomerate SoftBank and chipmaker Nvidia, along with $50 billion from Amazon. Additional investors are expected to join as the round progresses.
Alongside the funding, OpenAI unveiled strategic partnerships with Amazon through its cloud arm AWS and with Nvidia, whose advanced chips remain central to large-scale AI training and deployment. As reported by The Times of India, the Amazon investment will begin with an initial $15 billion infusion, followed by another $35 billion in the coming months subject to certain conditions. Under the Amazon partnership, AWS will serve as the exclusive third-party cloud distribution provider for OpenAI Frontier, creating a powerful defensive moat that locks OpenAI into a vast, dedicated sales and deployment channel. The collaboration extends to building a Stateful Runtime Environment powered by OpenAI's models for Amazon Bedrock, directly integrating the AI stack into a major cloud ecosystem.
The Nvidia partnership secures exclusive access to 3 gigawatts of dedicated inference capacity and 2 gigawatts of training on Vera Rubin systems, representing a direct investment in the compute power needed to run advanced models at scale. Nvidia's Vera Rubin system promises 10 times more performance per watt than its predecessor, addressing the primary economic constraint of large-scale AI deployment. This efficiency gain is a fundamental shift in the economics of scale, allowing data centers to pack more compute into the same power envelope while running AI models at the frontier requires staggering amounts of power.
The funding announcement comes as OpenAI points to strong user growth metrics to demonstrate accelerating adoption. According to The Times of India, ChatGPT now has more than 900 million weekly active users and over 50 million paying consumer subscribers, with January and February on track to become the platform's biggest months for new subscriptions. The company added that more than nine million businesses currently pay to use ChatGPT for workplace applications, while weekly users of its Codex software development tool have more than tripled since the start of the year to 1.6 million.
The disclosure of usage figures appears aimed at reassuring investors amid scrutiny over the economics of large-scale AI development. As reported by The Times of India, the funding announcement comes as competition intensifies in the AI sector, with rival Anthropic -- founded by former OpenAI employees -- gaining attention for its Claude models, while Google's Gemini has also emerged as a strong challenger. The primary risk to converting this massive investment into sustainable growth is execution, as OpenAI has set an ambitious target of roughly $600 billion in total compute spend by 2030. The company faces intensifying competition from Anthropic, which has built a strategic alliance with Google Cloud, offering Claude models directly on the Vertex AI platform, creating a two-front battle for the high-value business market.
