OpenAI has unveiled ChatGPT Work, marking its biggest step toward transforming ChatGPT into an AI super app that combines coding, document creation and workflow automation in one interface. According to Business Standard, this represents a strategic shift from positioning ChatGPT primarily as a chatbot to creating a unified workspace where users can research information, write code, generate documents and presentations, build websites and automate workflows without leaving the application. The redesigned desktop application brings together Chat, Work and Codex with users able to switch between these modes depending on the task, allowing the assistant to move beyond answering prompts to executing work autonomously. ChatGPT Work now has 10.5 million domestic users, according to Roy Morgan, with about 40% of ChatGPT prompts from Australian users being work-related. The platform is available globally today for Mac and Windows, with Chat, Work, and Codex available on every plan, including Free.
As reported by OpenAI, ChatGPT Work can take action across your apps and files, stay with a project for hours if needed, and turn a goal into finished work. The company describes this as 'a whole new way to get work done'. The platform introduces Scheduled Tasks that allow ChatGPT to continue working on projects even when users aren't actively using their devices. These tasks can take new messages and turn them into updated docs or slides and circulate the changes among team members, enabling continuous automation of workplace tasks. A desktop function called Computer Use gives the tool the power to 'use your computer on your behalf to execute tasks in the background across your apps, tools, and browser – clicking, typing, and moving files where they need to go'. Users can go beyond refining prompts to producing reports, building campaign briefs, meeting agendas from Slack messages, and creating interactive dashboards, apps and websites.
GPT-5.6 is available across three model tiers with different pricing structures: Sol is priced at $5 input / $30 output, Terra at $2.50 input / $15 output, and Luna at $1 input / $6 output. According to OpenAI, the rollout is starting globally now and will continue gradually toward full availability over the next 24 hours. The rollout is starting globally now and will continue gradually toward full availability over the next 24 hours. GPT-5.6 is available to Pro and Enterprise users. In Codex, it is available to Plus and higher plans. API users can access Sol, Terra, and Luna through the OpenAI API, with Programmatic Tool Calling letting GPT-5.6 write and run programs in-memory that coordinate tools and process intermediate results, making it Zero Data Retention (ZDR) compatible. Multi-agent functionality, initially available in beta, lets GPT-5.6 run concurrent subagents and synthesize their work in a single request. Sol establishes a new benchmark for intelligence and efficiency, delivering state-of-the-art performance across coding, knowledge work, cybersecurity and scientific applications while using fewer tokens and lowering costs.
ChatGPT Work is built to support workflows from specific industries including sales, finance, marketing, data analytics, engineering and operations. To demonstrate the platform's capabilities, OpenAI product marketing executive Sahil Punamia provided examples of creating meeting outlines from Slack messages and extracting information from Google Documents. Virgin Atlantic's head of digital products, Nathan Bolt, used ChatGPT Work to evaluate a passenger's customer journey, assess it against competitors, and reduced weeks of data analysis into hours to help build the airline's five-year plan. Australian Payments Plus, which operates payment infrastructure including Eftpos, BPAY payments, and real-time payments, has rolled out ChatGPT Work across the organisation. Chief operations officer Jackson Backhouse noted that the platform works within security and identity access management guardrails and allows employees to use enterprise-grade tools with clear guidance. The unified plugins directory connects ChatGPT with services such as Slack, Gmail, Google Drive, calendars and customer relationship management (CRM) platforms, while the desktop application adds an in-app browser and Computer Use capability for interacting with websites and desktop applications.
The release of ChatGPT Work positions OpenAI against Anthropic's Claude Cowork, which expanded its rival agent to the web and mobile on July 7, and Google's always-on agent, Spark, which was released earlier this year. According to reports, the introduction highlights the growing rivalry in the professional AI space, with technology firms investing heavily in autonomous agents as organisations seek software that can complete advanced assignments with little manual involvement. OpenAI and Anthropic, both seen as potential IPO candidates, are competing aggressively for enterprise customers, where commercial opportunities are considered far greater than in the consumer segment. Major AI companies are increasingly developing agents that can plan projects independently, execute multi-step workflows, work across enterprise software, write code when required, and produce complete business outputs rather than individual responses. The commercial opportunity extends well beyond consumer subscriptions, with enterprise AI emerging as one of the industry's fastest-growing revenue streams. The announcement also highlights the AI industry's biggest challenge: enterprise customers increasingly evaluate AI not only on model capability but also on the cost of deploying it across thousands or millions of requests, with token-based pricing increasing rapidly as usage scales making cost optimisation a strategic priority.
