US chipmaker Marvell Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ: MRVL) has announced a $250 million investment to expand its engineering operations in India over the next three years, with targeted 15% annual workforce growth specifically aimed at the AI and data center market. According to latest reports, the company plans to double its headcount during this period as part of its strategic expansion. The investment will focus on strengthening Marvell's global innovation network through enhanced research and development capabilities, with the company setting ambitious growth targets to capitalize on the expanding AI data center infrastructure market.
As part of this investment, Marvell is turning its Bangalore facility into a dedicated AI development engine, with the campus recently expanded to include a new office spanning roughly 100,000 square feet. As reported by multiple sources, the company's Indian workforce currently stands at approximately 1,700 employees as of late 2025, representing significant growth from just a handful of engineers in recent years. The Bangalore facility serves as Marvell's headquarters in India and has been the company's primary hub for product development for years. The expanded infrastructure will support the design and development of advanced semiconductor solutions for AI, cloud and data infrastructure applications.
Marvell is positioning itself strategically in the AI chip landscape by focusing on the connective tissue of AI data centers: networking, interconnect, and custom silicon that enables everything else to work together. The company has been assembling a broader strategy around AI data center connectivity that includes both acquisitions and partnerships. A recent acquisition of XConn Technologies, which specializes in chiplet interconnect solutions, fits neatly into the vision of providing customized silicon for AI workloads. Additionally, a collaboration with Nvidia positions Marvell deeper into the AI data center ecosystem, reflecting a systematic approach to building out capabilities to serve the growing market.
Beyond technology development, Marvell continues to invest in India's semiconductor ecosystem through collaboration with universities, startups, industry associations and government organisations. The company works with emerging startups through mentorship and strategic collaborations aligned with its technology and product portfolios. Marvell collaborates with leading universities to support internship programmes, faculty development initiatives, joint research projects, and curriculum development designed to better prepare students for careers in advanced technology fields. The company also actively engages with industry associations and government bodies to foster greater collaboration across the ecosystem and support the continued growth of India's semiconductor industry.
The MSTEM programme supports students pursuing degrees in electronics, electrical engineering and computer science and attracted more than 7,000 applicants from leading universities across India. According to Business Standard, 100 outstanding students were selected to receive scholarships through this initiative. The programme provides financial support, hands-on industry experience and exposure to real-world technology development to cultivate the next generation of AI and semiconductor innovators. As per Rediff Moneynews, Marvell remains committed to expanding R&D investments, strengthening the country's semiconductor ecosystem and developing the next generation of technology talent, with the 15% annual workforce growth target suggesting strong confidence in AI-related revenue pipeline expansion.
