
India is positioning itself as a proving ground for artificial intelligence due to its unique linguistic, cultural and digital diversity. As JioStar's chief architect argues, India is one of the few markets where technology must simultaneously serve hundreds of millions of people across languages, cultures, economic realities, and digital behaviours. This complexity creates an environment where AI systems must understand context, intent and human behaviour at extraordinary scale, making India's market a blueprint for global AI innovation. As a result, the most valuable AI innovations may not emerge from environments optimised for simplicity, but from environments that demand complexity - and few places demand it more than India.
The Centre is planning an AI capability watch centre to monitor frontier AI risks, strengthen governance and support safer adoption of advanced artificial intelligence. According to reports from Business Standard, the capability watch, likely to be established within six to 12 months, will also monitor developments across the AI and frontier AI ecosystem, and identify experts working on advanced AI risk assessment. This initiative comes as AI shifts from showcasing capabilities to solving real-world problems, where success depends on understanding context, intent and human behaviour at extraordinary scale.
The proposal has been put forward by the Technology and Policy Expert Committee (TPEC), an advisory body on AI constituted by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology in April this year. As reported by Business Standard, the committee, currently chaired by IT Secretary S Krishnan, includes B Ravindran, professor at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras; Rajat Moona, director of IIT Gandhinagar; and representatives from industry bodies Nasscom, the Manufacturers' Association for Information Technology (Mait), and the Data Security Council of India.
In financial services, AI is helping simplify decision-making and make digital experiences more accessible to first-time users. In healthcare, AI is beginning to bridge gaps in knowledge discovery and improve quality of care. In commerce, it is making interactions more personalised and relevant by understanding intent rather than relying solely on historical behaviour. Media and entertainment offers perhaps the most visible example, where consumers increasingly move away from browsing and searching towards expressing intent. For example, a user asking 'Show me the best moments of Thalaiva' could mean something different in different markets - the word could refer to Rajinikanth for a movie fan in Chennai, or to MS Dhoni for a cricket fan following the IPL. The challenge is not language translation, but contextual understanding where the same word carries different meanings depending on culture, geography, interests, and timing.
Alongside the capability watch centre, the government is expected to encourage information technology and IT-enabled services companies to undertake large-scale workforce retraining to build AI capabilities. As reported by Business Standard, officials emphasized the need for continuous learning beyond formal education given the pace at which AI is advancing and evolving. The IT ministry also plans to invite the Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF) to participate in fostering collaboration between scientists and AI researchers and advance the use of AI in scientific research. This initiative aims to strengthen the integration of AI technology across various sectors and research applications.
