HCL Technologies (HCLTech) and Transport for NSW (TfNSW) have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to explore the advancement of AI-powered analytics capabilities for the Sydney Coordinated Adaptive Traffic System (SCATS). According to reports from Business Standard, this collaboration aims to enhance the current SCATS tool's capabilities through artificial intelligence integration. Swapan Johri, President, Growth Markets at HCLTech, emphasized the collaboration's potential to combine Australian innovation with Indian technology and talent to help build smarter, more responsive cities. As he stated, "The world's major cities are expanding at an unprecedented pace, creating new opportunities to reimagine how technology can manage increasingly complex transport networks."
The existing SCATS tool enables users to interact with traffic, congestion and geospatial data using natural language queries and compare insights across selected time periods. As reported by Business Standard, SCATS was developed by the NSW Government in 1975 and is now installed in over 200 cities across more than 30 countries. The system currently operates on a global scale, providing comprehensive traffic management solutions. Chris Minns, Premier of New South Wales, highlighted that SCATS is "a great example of New South Wales innovation with an international impact," noting that the collaboration will explore how AI can make sophisticated traffic information more accessible to people managing growing cities in India.
HCLTech will explore integrating Sarvam's multilingual foundation models with SCATS, enabling traffic operators, planners and engineers to query and analyze SCATS data in local Indian languages. According to the MoU, this integration will expand the system's accessibility to users who speak Indian languages, enhancing the platform's global utility. The collaboration will also examine solutions to address local data sovereignty requirements for smart city infrastructure, including exploring the deployment of SCATS AI infrastructure on premises through private cloud environments, allowing cities greater control over their data and AI systems.
