The global digital games market has reached $223.90 billion in 2026 and is projected to grow to $319.27 billion by 2033, representing a 5.2% CAGR according to latest market data. Mobile games command the largest platform share at 49.0%, equivalent to $109.71 billion, sustained by an installed base exceeding 3 billion smartphone users globally. Asia Pacific leads the market with 47% of revenues at $105.23 billion in 2026, while North America accounts for 24% at $53.74 billion. The market expansion is driven by digital gaming adoption, with global mobile broadband subscriptions surpassing 6 billion in 2023 and the normalization of digital storefronts permanently displacing physical media as the industry's center of gravity.
Major technology companies are significantly expanding their gaming initiatives, with Samsung, Apple, Meta, Netflix and now PHYND all pushing deeper into gaming ecosystems. According to reports from Business Standard, Samsung is taking a 'full-stack gaming lineup' to Gamescom 2026, covering smartphones, monitors, TVs, PCs, storage and gaming services. The companies are approaching the market from different directions, but gaming offers each of them valuable opportunities to make existing hardware and services more useful while keeping consumers spending more time within their ecosystems.
PHYND has expanded its cloud gaming service to Amazon Fire TV devices in the United States, launching a free, ad-supported cloud gaming service that gives Fire TV users access to PHYND's catalog without buying consoles or subscriptions. As reported by Beet.TV, the service is available on Fire TV Stick 4K, Fire TV Stick 4K Max, Fire TV Stick 4K Plus and third-generation Fire TV Cube, as well as Amazon Ember 2-Series, 4-Series, QLED Series and Mini-LED Series televisions. The company's launch catalog includes games from independent studios such as Microids, Tate Multimedia, Fishing Cactus and Plug In Digital, featuring recognizable titles like Smurfs Kart, Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?, Garfield Lasagna Party, Agatha Christie: Death on the Nile, and Redout: Solar Challenge. PHYND's strategy focuses on pre-roll advertising and sponsored rewards to finance free access without interrupting gameplay, with CEO André Swanston emphasizing that "whether it's seeing an ad, whether it's giving you a reward or sponsored experience, we're helping you access this game for free."
Apple offers the clearest example of how gaming has moved up the priority list, with the company spending years improving graphics capabilities of its chips. As reported by Business Standard, with the A17 Pro, Apple introduced hardware-accelerated ray tracing to the iPhone 15 Pro and began bringing games such as Resident Evil Village, Resident Evil 4, Death Stranding and Assassin's Creed Mirage to its devices. With iOS 26, iPadOS 26 and macOS 26, Apple introduced a dedicated Games app that brings games, recommendations, friends, achievements and events into one place. The software expansion includes Apple Arcade continuing to add titles, including established franchises such as Civilization and Madden NFL 27.
The gaming market presents significant scale opportunities for Big Tech companies. According to Sensor Tower's State of Gaming 2026 report as reported by Business Standard, games were downloaded 52 billion times across mobile, PC and console platforms in 2025, with approximately 50 billion downloads on mobile. Google Play accounted for about 81% of game downloads, the App Store 15%, and PC and console together just 4%. Mobile games generated ₹6.9 lakh crore in revenue in 2025, with revenue rising 1% to ₹82 billion despite declining downloads, as the market shifted toward retaining and engaging existing players. The market is increasingly dominated by subscription-based models, with subscription services being the fastest-growing business model, catalysed by Microsoft's restructuring of Xbox Game Pass tiers and Apple Arcade's expansion.
Meta's gaming strategy is particularly dependent on virtual reality, with gaming serving as one of the clearest reasons to buy the Quest headset. As reported by Business Standard, Meta's June 2026 VR Games Showcase featured upcoming Quest titles including PAYDAY: Aces High, Transformers: Beyond Reality Redux and several multiplayer games. The company is also integrating existing gaming ecosystems, with Xbox and Meta announcing that eligible Horizon+ subscribers would get a starter edition of Xbox Game Pass, providing access to more than 50 games and 10 hours of cloud gaming per month. This strategy addresses VR's traditional chicken-and-egg problem by bringing existing gaming ecosystems into the headset.
