Amazon has launched Alexa+, its generative AI-powered voice assistant, in India with Early Access beginning Wednesday. According to reports from Business Standard, the service is available free to all Indian customers during Early Access and will remain free for Prime members after the Early Access period ends. Prime Lite, Prime Shopping Edition and non-Prime customers will need to subscribe separately at ₹2,000 per month unless they move to a qualifying Prime plan. As reported by The Times of India, Teena Sidana, Country Manager for Alexa, Amazon India, emphasized that "Indian households are multi-generational, multilingual, and beautifully complex. Alexa+ was designed for that complexity. She understands intent, adapts to your household's preferences, and lets each family member interact in the way that feels most natural to them."
Alexa+ supports English, Hindi and 'Hinglish' at launch, with Amazon indicating that more Indian languages will be added in the future. As reported by Business Standard, the assistant can switch between languages during conversations, including within the same sentence. Amazon has trained the assistant to understand Indian terms such as 'dhai baje' and 'ek paav', as well as family relationships like bhanja, bhateeji, jethani and devar. The assistant also understands references to Bollywood, cricket, Indian festivals and cultural preferences. According to The Times of India, Sidana noted that "India is home to one of the most diverse set of customers in the world, and we're excited for them to experience how much smarter, personalized, and more intuitive Alexa+ has become. It was truly built around the way they live."
According to the latest reports, Alexa+ is based on Amazon Bedrock, using new architecture that connects over 70 large language models including Amazon-made models and models from Anthropic to hundreds of services and devices. The assistant claims to better understand context and natural conversation in English, Hindi, and Hinglish. As reported by The Indian Express, Michele Butti, Vice President, Alexa International, explained that "The technology we use is our own Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) that is fine-tuned for Indian homes today. In a chatbot, where you are just typing or speaking, you don't need the ability to deal with a noisy home in the background. It's one person, one device. But with a voice-based interaction, everybody's in the background, there's a pressure cooker, the TV is on, and there's a child talking. The microphones have to be fine-tuned to listen only to that person, that wake word and that command, and adapt to the household."
According to Business Standard, Alexa+ can manage calendars, send emails, create shopping lists, recommend meals, control smart home devices and find products on Amazon. The assistant can remember user information such as dietary preferences, favourite restaurants and important dates. Users can upload documents and images through the Alexa app or email, then ask questions based on that content. The service also offers continuity across devices, allowing conversations started on Echo Show to be continued through the Alexa app or Fire TV. As reported by The Times of India, Alexa+ can create shopping lists, track Amazon.in deliveries, alert users about price drops, compare product features and summarise verified reviews. The assistant supports entertainment services including Amazon Music, Spotify, Apple Music, JioSaavn and Prime Video, with Netflix also listed among supported services. For smart home controls, the assistant works with Atomberg, Qubo, Dreame and Wipro devices, and can create smart home routines through voice commands.
As reported by Business Standard, India is the first country where Amazon is bringing Alexa+ and Amazon Now together, creating a unique integration where the AI voice assistant will be integrated with Amazon's quick-commerce experience. This means the AI voice assistant will be integrated with Amazon's quick-commerce experience, allowing users to add requested items to their cart as they continue making requests. However, the order will not be automatically placed and requires manual voice confirmation. According to The Times of India, Soon, Amazon said Alexa+ will support EazyDiner, Swiggy, District by Zomato, MakeMyTrip, Home Triangle and TripAdvisor. Alexa+ supports entertainment services including Amazon Music, Spotify, Apple Music, JioSaavn and Prime Video, with Netflix also listed among supported services.
According to the latest reports, Alexa+ claims that is designed to protect customer privacy and security with comprehensive privacy controls. The Privacy dashboard lets customers review and manage their interactions, listen to exactly what Alexa heard, review shared attachments, and set voice recording retention preferences. The assistant is built with privacy-first architecture, ensuring user data remains secure while providing the enhanced conversational capabilities. This privacy focus addresses growing concerns about AI assistant data collection and user control over their digital interactions.
