
Artificial intelligence is fundamentally changing how video games are created, moving beyond traditional back-end applications to become part of the production pipeline itself. According to Business Standard, AI is now generating assets, accelerating prototyping, automating testing, improving localisation and compressing development cycles that once demanded far larger teams and longer timelines. At Krafton India, vice-president Minu Lee reports that AI is helping studios iterate faster across development and live operations, allowing developers to spend less time on repetitive production work and more on gameplay, design and player experience. As AlphaZegus founder Rohit Agarwal explains, generative AI changes the front-end of creation itself, making AI part of the production process rather than just powering non-playable characters, matchmaking, or recommendation systems.
India has built one of the world's largest gaming audiences but produced relatively few globally recognised gaming franchises, with the industry's biggest constraint being the cost of turning creative ideas into intellectual property. According to Niko Partners, India became the fastest-growing gaming market in 2025, crossing the $1 billion revenue mark with 511 million players, with numbers expected to reach nearly 707 million by 2030. However, as LVL Zero's Sagar Nair notes, the biggest gap has never been audience scale but the ability to consistently convert creative ambition into globally scalable products and IP. The Supreme Court's recent decision to uphold 28% GST on online gaming bets has effectively closed one of the industry's biggest legal battles, while venture capital increasingly flows towards original IP rather than transaction-led gaming businesses.
Generative AI is dramatically reducing the cost of experimentation in gaming development, allowing creators to test, discard, refine and try again before capital runs out. Building globally scalable IP takes 50 swings to land one hit, and the cost of each swing was historically too high, according to STAN's Parth Chadha. Tasks such as concept art, asset creation, localisation and prototyping that once accounted for large shares of pre-production time and cost can increasingly be completed through AI-assisted workflows, allowing studios to test ideas before committing substantial capital. MetaShot's Kashyap Reddy reports that the gap between a small team and a credible product has shrunk significantly, with many Indian studios deploying AI to move faster across prototyping, personalisation, live operations and player acquisition.
Indian gaming studios are already demonstrating how AI can enable original intellectual property development. Nodding Heads Games' Raji: An Ancient Epic showed that a game rooted in Indian mythology could find a global audience despite being developed by a small independent studio. More recently, SuperGaming's Indus Battle Royale has sought to build an original Indian science-fiction universe. According to Bitkraft Ventures's Anuj Tandon, AI is lowering production barriers across art, coding, localisation and design, allowing smaller teams to build games that previously required far larger studios. The World University of Design reports that AI is allowing students and independent creators to prototype and iterate ideas much earlier in the creative process, while Mahindra University's B K Chakravarthy notes that as AI takes over more of the execution, competitive advantage shifts towards original thinking, storytelling and design.
While AI reduces barriers to game creation, it also increases competition for player attention as more developers can enter the market. As AlphaZegus' Rohit Agarwal warns, the concern is very real that lower barriers will inevitably increase the volume of games entering the market, but success will depend on building compelling experiences rather than generating the most assets. Lumikai's Salone Sehgal argues that the scarcest resource in gaming is no longer content creation but sustained player attention, as AI dramatically expands content supply. Neela Mediatech's Harjeet Chhabra emphasizes that AI's biggest contribution lies in eliminating repetitive work rather than replacing creators, with storytelling, memorable characters and meaningful player experiences remaining fundamentally human challenges. The industry's opportunity lies not in discovering AI but in removing the economic barriers that have historically limited India's gaming innovation potential.
