Aravind Srinivas, 32, faced significant academic challenges early in his career that could have derailed his entrepreneurial ambitions. According to reports from Mint, Srinivas could not secure admission to the Computer Science programme at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras and narrowly missed switching branches by just 0.01 CGPA. Instead of accepting defeat, he joined the Electrical Engineering dual-degree programme and continued studying machine learning and artificial intelligence independently while completing his engineering degree. The setbacks extended beyond IIT, as he was initially refused admission to a machine learning course due to concerns that Electrical Engineering students would struggle with the subject matter.
Srinivas's determination led him to pursue advanced education at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), though his application was unsuccessful. As reported by Mint, he instead enrolled at the University of California, Berkeley, where he focused on research in deep learning, reinforcement learning, computer vision and generative AI. During his time at Berkeley, he secured internships at OpenAI, Google and DeepMind, gaining valuable industry experience before launching his own startup.
Srinivas's entrepreneurial journey began with disappointment when his first startup—a Twitter search product—failed after changes to the platform's API made the business unsustainable. According to Mint, in 2022, he co-founded Perplexity AI alongside Denis Yarats, Johnny Ho and Andy Konwinski, with the aim of building an AI-powered answer engine. The startup has since grown into one of the most closely watched names in the global AI industry, attracting investment from prominent backers including Jeff Bezos and reportedly drawing acquisition interest from Apple and Meta.
Despite interest from major technology companies, Srinivas has stated his intention to keep Perplexity AI independent. As reported by Mint, earlier this year, he shared on X that the company plans to pursue an initial public offering (IPO) after 2028. Born and raised in Chennai, Srinivas is best known as the co-founder and CEO of Perplexity AI, which he describes as 'the fastest way to get answers to any questions'.
