Abu Dhabi-based MGX has successfully raised $49 billion for one of the largest artificial intelligence-focused funds in history, surpassing its original target of $45 billion. According to reports from Bloomberg News, the two-year-old firm attracted investments from major institutional and private investors across the Middle East, North America, Asia, and Europe. The fund closed in recent weeks, positioning MGX among the most consequential AI investors globally. To put this achievement in perspective, the entire global venture capital market deployed about $330 billion in all of 2024, making MGX's $49 billion raise roughly 15% of that figure for a single sector.
Chaired by Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed Al Nahyan and backed by Mubadala Investment Co. and G42, MGX has rapidly assembled a comprehensive portfolio spanning frontier AI models, semiconductor infrastructure, and data centers. As reported by Bloomberg News, the firm has invested in OpenAI and xAI, while backing global projects alongside BlackRock Inc. and Microsoft Corp. The company plans to spend as much as $10 billion annually over the next few years as it pursues a target of more than $100 billion in assets under management. The firm's leadership includes Khaldoon Al Mubarak, figures who sit at the intersection of Abu Dhabi's sovereign wealth apparatus and its tech ambitions.
The fundraising has enabled MGX to establish significant partnerships across the global AI ecosystem. In March 2025, MGX finalized a $2 billion investment in Binance, the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange by trading volume, with the transaction settled using the USD1 stablecoin. The firm has also participated in the Global AI Infrastructure Investment Partnership alongside BlackRock, GIP, and Microsoft. Additionally, MGX has been involved in the Stargate Project, the massive data center initiative connected to OpenAI and SoftBank. The investor base reflects the scale of ambition, with funding sources including regional sovereign wealth funds and global institutional investors, featuring a minimum ticket size of around $500 million.
The fundraising represents MGX's strategic shift toward operating more like a global alternative asset manager, distinguishing itself from traditional Gulf sovereign wealth funds that largely deploy government money. According to Bloomberg News, this model allows the firm to pursue larger transactions while broadening its investor base and potentially scaling toward its long-term ambitions. The fresh capital provides additional firepower as the cost of developing frontier AI systems continues to climb, with training models and semiconductor infrastructure requiring tens of billions of dollars in outlays. The sheer size of $49 billion in committed capital looking for AI infrastructure deals means increased competition for assets, which could push valuations higher for data center operators, chip designers, and cloud infrastructure companies.
