Ideas N Journey (InJ), an India-Japan-focused investment platform, is planning to deploy $100 million across consumer-focused real assets and healthcare sectors in India. According to reports from Mint, the firm is specifically targeting consumer brands backed by infrastructure assets that leverage Japanese technology. On the healthcare front, InJ is focusing on niche healthcare bets including obesity and gut health, capitalizing on the growing fitness tracking and diet management trends.
The firm recently made a $5 million investment in ECHT Ventures, a multi-sector family-run business, marking the first institutional investment ECHT has raised. As reported by Mint, this investment is focused on ECHT's consumer-facing waterfront project portfolio, with the InJ-ECHT platform planning to build infrastructure to increase inland freight movement. InJ also plans to take ECHT public through a mainboard initial public offering within the next three years.
InJ is positioning itself as a venture studio to provide portfolio companies access to the firm's founders' network of connections across Japan and India. According to Mint, Dheeraj Rathi, partner and investor in India at InJ Corporation, emphasized that the idea is to tap small company innovation in Japan and innovation adoption in India by small and medium businesses, with capital serving as a facilitator rather than the primary focus.
The firm is specifically targeting family-run businesses as part of its portfolio building process, aligning with a growing trend of younger generations professionalizing and globalizing their family businesses. As reported by Mint, Rathi indicated that the firm ideally wants to help backed companies create joint ventures to scale globally, seeking entrepreneurs willing to partner and potentially create billion-dollar businesses faster through Japanese company partnerships.
InJ's maiden investment vehicle is structured as a fund out of GIFT City in Gujarat, with the 20-year tax holiday being a key consideration for the location choice. According to Mint, Rathi explained that the availability of the 20-year tax holiday for eligible fund structures, alongside the opportunity to build a sustained investment platform around India's infrastructure and emerging sectors, was an important factor in choosing GIFT City. The fund consists of limited partners split between India high-net worth individuals and Japanese private equity firms.
