
GalaxEye, an Infosys-backed Indian space technology start-up building next-generation Earth Observation capabilities through its proprietary OptoSAR technology, has acquired StarOps, a Bengaluru-based spacecraft engineering company. According to reports from Business Standard, this acquisition marks a significant milestone in GalaxEye's journey to becoming a fully integrated space technology company. The integration brings StarOps' proprietary technologies, qualified satellite platforms and deep systems engineering expertise, along with an experienced engineering team, several of whom previously worked at TeamIndus on the Lunar Lander and Rover. StarOps was incorporated in 2022 and traces its origins to TeamIndus, India's pioneering spacetech startup set up in 2010, which secured a spot in the Google Lunar XPRIZE competition to land a spacecraft on the moon. The acquisition comes about a month after GalaxEye lost contact with Mission Drishti, its maiden Earth observation satellite and the world's first satellite combining synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and optical imaging, which was launched in May aboard a SpaceX mission and experienced an anomaly following a geomagnetic solar storm during the final stage of its launch and early orbit phase.
The StarOps team brings proficiency across spacecraft systems engineering, mission operations, propulsion, avionics, flight computing, guidance and navigation, structures and mechanisms, electrical systems, programme management and ground operations. According to Business Standard, the team is further supported by a panel of veteran ISRO experts with extensive experience in designing, qualifying and delivering complex space programmes. The acquisition brings years of satellite design, development and qualification experience to GalaxEye, further strengthening its internal capabilities across the satellite development value chain. Nirmal Suraj Gadde, StarOps cofounder and now missions lead at GalaxEye, stated that their focus has always been on building indigenous satellite systems and manufacturing capabilities that can accelerate the growth of India's commercial space industry. The merger aims to accelerate product development, deepen vertical integration and strengthen its ability to deliver end-to-end space missions.
The integration adds a strong portfolio of indigenous spacecraft technologies and engineering know-how to GalaxEye. According to Business Standard, these include qualified satellite bus platforms across the 50-kg, 150-kg and 250-kg classes, proprietary subsystem technologies, qualification heritage, testing infrastructure and engineering tools. With more than 66 per cent indigenisation across its satellite systems, StarOps has developed technologies that reduce dependence on global supply chains while enabling faster development cycles and lower mission costs. For GalaxEye, this connection is particularly relevant because its planned EO systems combine synthetic aperture radar (SAR) with optical imaging, creating what the company calls OptoSAR - intended to provide all-weather, day-and-night Earth Observation capabilities. The acquisition brings StarOps' experienced engineering team, proprietary spacecraft technologies and satellite platforms under GalaxEye, with the focus remaining on developing and deploying a constellation of OptoSAR satellites.
As reported by Business Standard, Suyash Singh, co-founder and chief executive officer of GalaxEye, stated that the acquisition is an important milestone in building a company that develops and owns the technologies defining the future of space. "By welcoming this exceptional team and their technologies into GalaxEye, we are significantly strengthening our capabilities across satellite engineering," Singh described the transaction as part of a broader effort to build spacecraft capabilities in-house. "Together, we are building a company capable of designing, engineering and operating advanced space systems from India for the world," Singh emphasized their focus on building indigenous satellite systems and manufacturing capabilities that can accelerate the growth of India's commercial space industry. According to Tracxn, GalaxEye, which was founded in 2021, has raised $24 million and counts Yali Capital, Anicut, Rainmatter and Speciale Invest as its investors.
According to Business Standard, by bringing spacecraft platforms, critical satellite subsystems and Earth Observation payloads together, GalaxEye is well positioned to deliver tightly integrated, reliable and scalable space solutions for defence, national security and commercial applications. The acquisition reinforces GalaxEye's long-term strategy of building indigenous technologies across the satellite value chain. The strategic significance lies in vertical integration, where a company controls more stages of designing, building and operating a product instead of depending heavily on outside suppliers. This can potentially give greater control over design choices, testing and development schedules, though the acquisition itself does not establish how quickly those benefits will translate into deployed spacecraft or commercial revenues. The acquisition comes at a critical time as GalaxEye works to recover from the setback of losing contact with Mission Drishti, with the company emphasizing that the focus remains on developing and deploying a constellation of OptoSAR satellites.
