Every financial year, equity investors can book ₹1.25 lakh of long-term capital gains tax-free. However, the maximum annual savings is capped at ₹15,625 (₹1.25 lakh exemption multiplied by 12.5% tax rate). Over a 20-year holding period, investors get approximately 19 usable harvests since the first year's units are not yet long-term. Even in this best-case scenario, the savings amount to about ₹2.97 lakh against a ₹10 lakh investment that grows past ₹1 crore over the same period.
Testing the strategy on the BSE Sensex Total Return Index across all rolling periods since 1996, a ₹10 lakh lumpsum investment saved a median of ₹2.77 lakh over 20 years. This represents approximately 1.9% of the final corpus or roughly 12 basis points per year added to returns. The exemption could be filled in only about one-third of the periods tested, with longer compounding periods showing diminishing returns as the savings are capped while the corpus continues growing.
As portfolios grow, the tax-saving benefit becomes proportionally smaller. Over a 15-year holding period, investors with ₹25 lakh and ₹1 crore both save approximately ₹2 lakh in tax. However, as a share of the corpus, the saving falls from 1.1% to 0.29% for the larger investor. For monthly SIP investors, a ₹10,000 monthly plan has close to nothing to harvest in the first year, about ₹11,000 in the second, and approximately ₹50,000 in the third against the ₹1.25 lakh exemption.
