The Reserve Bank of India has announced four separate opportunities for Sovereign Gold Bond (SGB) premature redemption in October 2026. According to reports from Personal Finance News and Mint, eligible SGB investors can choose from four different tranches with specific redemption dates and request submission windows. The schedule provides investors with multiple exit opportunities throughout the month, each requiring careful coordination between redemption dates and request deadlines. However, investors cannot simply wait until the redemption date to act - the request for premature redemption must be submitted within a specified window that opens weeks before the actual payment date.
As reported by Mint, the October 2026 premature redemption schedule includes four SGB tranches with distinct redemption dates and request submission windows. The schedule shows SGB 2019-20 Series V with redemption on October 15, 2026 and request window from September 14-October 5, 2026. SGB 2020-21 Series VII is scheduled for October 19, 2026 with request submission from September 19-October 9, 2026. The remaining tranches include SGB 2020-21 Series I on October 28, 2026 and SGB 2019-20 Series VI on October 30, 2026. The first deadline is particularly important for investors holding SGB 2019-20 Series V, who have until October 5, 2026 to submit their request for the October 15 redemption. The other three deadlines fall on October 9, 19, and 21 respectively.
According to the RBI framework, SGBs become eligible for premature redemption after five years from the date of issue, regardless of the standard eight-year maturity period. As reported by Mint, investors must verify their SGB series and issue date before submitting redemption requests, as merely holding an SGB does not guarantee eligibility. The redemption price is linked to prevailing gold prices under the applicable RBI framework, with the redemption value based on the simple average of the closing price of 999-purity gold for the previous three working days, published by the India Bullion and Jewellers Association. Investors must follow specific processes through their bank, post office, or stockbroker intermediaries, and should check the exact series and issue date of the SGB in their demat account or holding statement before making a request.
From April 1, 2026, the capital-gains exemption for SGB redemption was narrowed, creating important distinctions for investors considering premature redemption. According to Mint, the amended provision provides exemption where an individual holds the SGB continuously from the date of original issue until maturity, applying to tax year 2026-27 and subsequent years. This means investors using the five-year premature-redemption facility should not assume the same capital-gains exemption available for SGBs held until maturity. The tax treatment should not be confused with the interest earned on SGBs, as the bonds carry a fixed interest component separate from the capital gain or loss arising from the gold-linked redemption value. Before opting for premature redemption, investors must verify several critical details including the specific SGB series and issue date, the applicable premature redemption date in October 2026, the last date for submitting redemption requests, and the redemption process followed by their intermediary.
