Investors of SGB 2019-20 Series X can now opt for premature redemption on September 11, 2026, after the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) announced the exit window based on the scheme's rules. According to RBI guidelines, premature redemption is allowed after completion of five years from the date of issuance, on interest payment dates. This tranche was originally issued on March 11, 2020, making it eligible for exit in September 2026, with an overall maturity of eight years. The early redemption represents an opportunity for investors to book significant gains driven by appreciation in gold prices over six years, along with annual interest income.
The RBI has set the redemption price for this tranche at ₹15,328 per unit, calculated as the simple average of the closing price of 999-purity gold for the three business days preceding the redemption date, as published by the India Bullion and Jewellers Association (IBJA). As reported by RBI rules, investors are expected to gain 259.8% compared with the original issue price of ₹4,260 per unit. For investors who applied at the time of issue and benefited from a ₹50 per gram discount, their effective purchase price was ₹4,210, resulting in overall returns of 264% excluding interest. The price calculation follows RBI guidelines that set redemption prices as the simple average of 999-purity gold closing prices for the three business days preceding the redemption date. According to RBI, the redemption price of ₹15,328 was arrived at using the closing gold prices for September 8, September 9 and September 10, 2026.
At the regular issue price of ₹4,260 per gram, an investment of ₹1 lakh would have bought approximately 23.47 grams of the Sovereign Gold Bond. At the September 11, 2026 premature redemption price of ₹15,328 per unit, the same holding would be worth approximately ₹3.60 lakh. That means the value of the investment based on the gold-linked redemption price has increased by around ₹2.60 lakh, translating into a gain of nearly 260% over six-and-a-half years. However, the ₹3.60 lakh figure does not include the interest earned by the investor during the holding period. These carry a fixed interest rate of 2.5% per annum, payable every six months, which makes the overall cash received by the investor higher than the redemption value calculated above. The actual overall return for investors is higher because SGBs also pay fixed interest, with the ₹3.60 lakh figure excluding the interest paid on the SGB.
Beyond appreciation in bullion prices, SGB investors earn 2.5% annual interest, paid semi-annually throughout the holding period, which further increases total returns. The bonds are issued by the Reserve Bank of India on behalf of the Government of India, with the primary objective of reducing gold demand in the domestic market. Investors can exit before final redemption, making this an attractive opportunity for those seeking to book significant gains from gold price appreciation over the six-year investment period, with the current redemption offering substantial returns that reflect the strong performance of gold prices during the holding period. The 2.5% interest is calculated on the original amount invested, and not on the increased market value of the gold bond, providing a steady cash flow during the holding period.
SGB 2019-20 Series X is among several Sovereign Gold Bond tranches that are becoming eligible for premature redemption over the coming months. The RBI's schedule covers multiple series between October 2026 and March 2027, giving eligible investors several opportunities to exit before the bonds' eight-year maturity. Investors should check the applicable redemption date and request window for their specific series before opting for premature redemption.
