The Sovereign Gold Bond (2018-19) Series I final redemption is available today, with investors earning nearly 5 times their original investment. According to reports from Upstox, the RBI auto-credits the proceeds without any prior documentation, making the redemption process seamless for subscribers. The central bank sends an advance e-mail to subscribers, requiring them to inform about any changes in their registered bank account for crediting SGB proceeds.
The SGB was issued on May 4, 2018, with the issue period running from April 16 to April 20, 2018. As reported by Upstox, the issue price was fixed at ₹3,114 per gram, while online applicants received a ₹50 discount, bringing the effective issuance price to ₹3,064 per gram. According to RBI rules, gold bonds can be redeemed or repaid at the end of eight years from the bond issuance date.
The nearly 5x returns achieved by investors in the SGB 2018-19 Series I demonstrates the significant appreciation potential of sovereign gold bonds. According to Upstox reports, this performance highlights the effectiveness of the government's gold monetization scheme and the favorable market conditions during the bond's eight-year maturity period. The automatic redemption process through RBI ensures smooth investor exits without requiring extensive documentation or manual processing.
