Prashant Kishor, founder of the Jan Suraaj Party and newly elected MLA from Bihar's Bankipur constituency, declared a net worth of around ₹198 crore when filing his nomination for the bypolls held on 30 July. According to reports from Mint, Kishor's movable family assets were worth ₹121.81 crore and immovable assets totaled ₹86.29 crore. The former election strategist contested and won his first election, marking a significant milestone in his political career.
As reported by Mint, the wealth distribution shows Kishor's spouse Jahanvi Das holding the largest portion with movable assets worth ₹89.52 crore and immovable assets valued at ₹76.54 crore. Their dependent Daibik Bhardwaj holds movable assets worth ₹7.19 lakh. Kishor himself maintains movable assets of ₹22.19 crore and immovable assets of ₹9.75 crore for non-agricultural land and ₹76.54 crore for residential buildings. The couple maintains ₹65,570 cash and ₹1,95,200 respectively, with Kishor's spouse holding ₹1,24,72,270 in mutual funds.
According to Mint, Kishor's investment portfolio includes ₹7.36 crore in fixed deposits at HDFC Bank, ₹38.12 lakh in Bharti Airtel shares, and ₹25.33 lakh in Indian Overseas Bank shares. His spouse holds ₹95.26 crore in shares of Vedhas Ventures Private Limited and ₹1.25 crore in mutual funds. The couple maintains ₹4.35 crore in life insurance policies, with Kishor holding ₹4.09 crore and his spouse ₹1.26 crore. Additionally, his spouse possesses 475 grams of gold and 200 grams of silver, while Kishor holds 1,985 shares of Bharti Airtel worth approximately ₹38.12 lakh and 73,243 shares of Indian Overseas Bank worth around ₹25.33 lakh.
A significant aspect of Kishor's financial portfolio is the concentration of investments in fixed deposits, which total ₹7.36 crore compared to only ₹63 lakh in equities. As per Mint, this FD-heavy strategy results in substantial tax obligations despite the principal amount being tax-free. With an assumed 7% interest rate on the FDs and a 30% tax slab, Kishor would earn approximately ₹51.52 lakh annually in interest, generating a tax liability of around ₹15.46 lakh plus ₹61,862 in Health and Education Cess, totaling ₹16.08 lakh with an effective tax rate of 31.2%.
As reported by Mint, Kishor's political journey began during Narendra Modi's 2012 Gujarat assembly elections campaign and gained prominence in the 2014 general elections through his political action group Citizens for Accountable Governance (CAG). He has worked with multiple parties including JD(U), RJD, Congress in 2015 Bihar polls, JD(U) from 2018 to 2020, YSR Congress in 2019 Andhra elections, AAP in 2020 Delhi elections, TMC in 2021 West Bengal elections, and DMK in 2021 Tamil Nadu elections. He formally launched the Jan Suraaj Party in 2024 and unsuccessfully contested the Bihar 2026 elections before winning the Bankipur bypoll.
