The Tripura Government has announced a 3% dearness allowance hike for state government employees, providing additional financial relief to employees across the state. The announcement was made at a press conference held at the State Secretariat in Agartala on Tuesday evening, following the meeting of the State Cabinet. Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha and Finance Minister Pranajit Singha Roy were present at the press conference while announcing the Cabinet decisions. This development aligns with the 3% hike expected at the central level, which would bring the total to 63% for central government employees.
Along with the DA hike, the State Government has announced a significant revision of the House Rent Allowance (HRA) for government employees. Under the revised arrangement, HRA will be increased from the existing 8% of Basic Pay to 10% of Basic Pay. At the same time, the maximum ceiling for HRA has been substantially enhanced from ₹3,000 to ₹10,000 per month. The revision is expected to provide additional monthly financial benefits to employees, particularly those whose HRA was previously restricted by the existing maximum ceiling. The corresponding increase in Dearness Relief (DR) for eligible pensioners is also expected to provide additional financial support to retired government employees.
There was no decision on the much-awaited dearness allowance hike in the Union Cabinet meeting held today. Central government employees are expecting a 3% hike in their existing dearness allowance, which would bring the total to 63%. The dearness allowance is provided to employees to reduce the impact of inflation on their salaries and is currently calculated based on the formula approved by the 7th Pay Commission, which takes the last 12 months' AICPI-IW data into account for calculation. Calculation based on the AICPI-IW data till June 2026 indicate a 3% hike in DA, as reported by The Economic Times.
The Union Cabinet took three decisions on Tuesday, including the approval of a commitment of ₹10,000 crore towards establishment of the SME Growth Fund for direct equity investments in Small and Medium Enterprises. The Fund is envisioned as a transformational instrument to support enterprises at critical inflection points in their growth journey, with majority allocation towards small and medium manufacturing focused enterprises. Additionally, the Cabinet approved setting up of Integrated Transport & Logistics Authority to address long-standing challenges arising from fragmented planning and implementation across multiple transport-related Ministries and agencies. The expected DA hike will be effective from July 1, 2026, as DA is revised twice a year as per the accepted formula.
Employees' unions have been urging the government to announce the DA hike early as a festive relief, with the Confederation of Central Government Employees and Workers telling the Government in a letter dated September 24, 2026 that "once the relevant CPI data and the applicable formula enable the revised rate to be determined, the proposal may kindly be processed and placed before the competent authority at the earliest possible opportunity." The Tripura government's announcement demonstrates the broader trend of state governments implementing DA hikes, providing additional context to the ongoing central government employee expectations.
