A couple with combined monthly income of ₹3.28 lakhs and no existing liabilities are well-positioned for major life goals including marriage, home purchase, and car acquisition. According to financial expert Ramalingam Kalirajan from Holistic Investment, their fixed monthly expenses of ₹20,000 (including eating out and entertainment) provide significant flexibility for planning. The couple's assets include ₹10 lakhs in FDs, ₹5 lakhs in liquid funds, ₹4.8 lakhs in mutual funds, and ₹1.5 lakhs in shares, totaling ₹21.3 lakhs in liquid and semi-liquid investments.
For the wedding, the couple can contribute ₹10-12 lakhs if parents are partly funding, using ₹5 lakhs from liquid funds and ₹5 lakhs from FDs. Kalirajan recommends avoiding breaking mutual funds as they are growth-oriented investments. For home purchase, Mumbai real estate requires ₹1.5-2 crores for a modest 2 BHK, needing a 20% down payment of ₹30-40 lakhs. With a combined income of ₹3.28 lakhs, they can afford home loan EMI of ₹80,000-1 lakh for a 20-year loan supporting ₹1.2-1.4 crores. Opting for a joint loan maximizes loan amount and tax benefits.
The couple should increase SIPs from ₹45,000 to ₹60,000 after marriage, with ₹25,000-30,000 of monthly surplus allocated to conservative hybrid funds or liquid funds. Kalirajan suggests stepping up SIPs to ₹45,000 and eventually ₹60,000 to accelerate wealth creation. The ₹12-15 lakhs accumulated over 3-4 years combined with bonuses and existing FDs can reach the ₹30-40 lakhs needed for home down payment. Long-term gains above ₹1.25 lakhs are taxed at 12.5%, while short-term gains are taxed at 20%. Allocate SIPs to mix of large-cap, flexicap, and mid-cap funds to avoid thematic or sectoral funds.
For car acquisition, Kalirajan recommends aiming for a mid-range car costing ₹10-12 lakhs. The couple should save ₹3-4 lakhs over 12-18 months for the down payment and finance the rest with affordable EMI of ₹10,000-15,000. Post-wedding, maintain at least ₹6-8 lakhs in liquid funds for emergencies covering 6-8 months of expenses. After marriage, rebalance portfolio to retain 70-80% in equity and 20-30% in debt for long-term growth and stability. Include a conservative hybrid fund to diversify investments and ensure adequate life and health insurance with term insurance covering 10-12 times annual income and health insurance enhanced to ₹10-15 lakhs.
