A ₹15 lakh fixed deposit can potentially generate approximately ₹1 lakh in annual income, but only under specific interest rate conditions. According to reports from Mint, the required interest rate to achieve this target is calculated as 6.67% per annum before taxes. This analysis comes as fixed deposits remain one of the most preferred investment options for individuals seeking easy, predictable returns amid challenging global equity markets due to ongoing US-Iran disputes.
Major public sector banks are currently offering fixed deposit rates between 6% and 6.8% for common citizens, as reported by Mint. The detailed rate structure shows Indian Bank leading at 6.80%, followed by Central Bank of India at 6.70%, while Bank of India offers 6.60%. Other major banks including Canara Bank, Union Bank of India, and Punjab National Bank provide rates ranging from 6.25% to 6.65%. These rates serve as a benchmark for estimating potential FD income generation.
According to the analysis by Mint, a ₹15 lakh FD can generate varying annual incomes based on different interest rates. At 6.00% interest, the annual income would be ₹90,000, while at 6.50%, it increases to ₹97,500. Higher rates of 6.75% and 7.00% would generate ₹1,01,250 and ₹1,05,000 respectively. The highest potential income of ₹1,12,500 can be achieved at 7.50% interest rate.
As reported by Mint, the analysis reveals that only a few financial institutions and tenures can currently offer rates close to or exceeding the required 6.67% threshold. The report emphasizes that comparison of interest rates, factoring in taxation (FDs are taxed as per applicable income tax slabs), proper due diligence, and consultation with certified financial advisors are essential for investment decisions. Looking at both pre-tax and post-tax returns can help determine whether a fixed deposit is suitable for meeting annual income goals.
