Indian equity markets demonstrated strong performance on July 9, with Sensex closing 238 points higher and Nifty crossing above 23,950 levels. According to latest market data, the Nifty gained 6.3% during the quarter, while the Nifty Capital Markets Index surged 23%, supporting mark-to-market gains across the sector. This updated performance data reinforces the positive outlook for India's capital markets sector in Q1FY27, with asset management companies expected to lead growth while brokers and exchanges face softer sequential earnings, as reported by Jefferies India. However, recent trading sessions have seen sharp declines in AMC stocks with HDFC AMC, UTI AMC, and ICICI Prudential AMC registering drops of over 2%, reflecting broader market volatility and sector-specific headwinds.
Among AMCs, Nippon Life India Asset Management is expected to be the biggest market share gainer, while Aditya Birla Sun Life AMC could see the largest decline. Investors will closely monitor whether fund houses have successfully passed on the impact of total expense ratio (TER) rationalisation across the value chain. AMCs are likely to benefit from higher other income and are better positioned to absorb the impact of lower expense ratios, as noted by Datta from Jefferies India. The addressable market remains significant with only ~10% penetration, though growth is expected to normalize to 12-15% as gold prices stabilize. However, recent market corrections have mechanically reduced the value of AMCs' Assets Under Management (AUM), leading investors to price in lower fee income and muted earnings growth for upcoming quarters.
For brokers, lower options trading activity is expected to weigh on revenues, though growth in margin funding books and rising adoption of Bombay Stock Exchange could partly offset the slowdown. The absence of margin trading book delinquencies seen in the previous quarter should support broker profitability. Exchanges such as Multi Commodity Exchange of India Limited (BSE) and Multi Commodity Exchange of India Limited (MCX) are expected to report muted sequential earnings as average daily trading volumes eased from March highs, with Datta noting that ADTO will go down considering the fact that volatility has cooled off. On the Multi Commodity Exchange, gold futures for August delivery appreciated by ₹1,038 (0.72%) to ₹1,44,749 per 10 grams.
Wealth managers are expected to remain the most resilient segment during the quarter, while registrars and transfer agents (RTAs) should continue to benefit from non-mutual fund revenue growth. According to Datta from Jefferies India, this segment is positioned to maintain stability despite broader market challenges. The resilience of wealth management firms reflects their diversified revenue streams and strong client relationships in the current market environment, with Nifty Next50 jumping 0.83% to 71,485 and Nifty Bank rising 0.90% to 57,252 showing positive momentum across key sectors. However, the near-term outlook for AMC stocks remains highly volatile due to global macroeconomic shocks and mounting sector-specific headwinds.
Jefferies remains cautious on depositories, citing slower initial public offering (IPO) activity, price deflation and muted folio growth as key risks facing this segment. Despite the overall positive outlook for capital markets, these factors could impact the performance of depository companies during the quarter, as reported by CNBC TV18. The Indian rupee outshone its Asian peers, lifted by RBI intervention, softer crude, and a weaker dollar index, with spot USD/INR expected to stay boxed in between 95.80 and 94.95 in the near term. While the long-term financialization of Indian savings remains a powerful structural tailwind for the sector, asset managers are likely to face turbulent trading sessions as the market reprices their AUM growth trajectories until crude oil prices stabilize and geopolitical anxieties in the Middle East subside.
