According to reports from Reuters, Torrent Gas aims to file updated draft papers for an initial public offering of up to ₹4,000 crore ($418.09 million) as early as this week. The updated draft red herring prospectus, expected this week, will be the company's first public IPO document. The company did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment on its IPO plans. As markets face pressure from rising crude oil prices and geopolitical tensions, Torrent Gas' proposed offering could add momentum to India's recovering primary market while giving investors access to the country's expanding city gas distribution sector.
As reported by Reuters, the company supplies piped natural gas (PNG) to households and industries in eight states and one union territory in India. Torrent Gas supplies PNG to over 2,00,000 households and more than 1,300 industries, while also operating about 500 compressed natural gas (CNG) stations. The company is part of Ahmedabad-based Torrent Group, whose other listed companies include Torrent Power and Torrent Pharma. According to information available on the company's website, Torrent Gas serves more than 200,000 households and over 1,300 industrial customers, giving it a significant presence in India's city gas distribution market.
According to Reuters, markets regulator SEBI had approved Torrent Gas's confidential IPO filing in June. The confidential filing allows companies to submit draft IPO papers to the markets regulator for review without making them public until they decide to proceed with the offering. The filing comes at a time when India's primary market activity has picked up substantially after a muted first half of the year due to the Iran war-driven spike in crude oil prices. Under the confidential filing mechanism, companies can submit their draft offer documents to the regulator for review without immediately making the details public, with information disclosed only when the company decides to proceed with the offering.
As reported by Reuters, as many as 27 companies have either launched or announced their IPOs since July, nearly matching the 28 recorded in the first half of 2026. This surge in IPO activity follows India's primary market picking up substantially after a muted first half of the year due to the Iran war-driven spike in crude oil prices. However, current market conditions present challenges, with Brent crude trading above $91 per barrel amid escalating U.S.-Iran tensions and the temporary ceasefire expiring. The revival follows a period of uncertainty in financial markets, including a sharp rise in crude oil prices linked to the Iran war, which contributed to a subdued IPO environment earlier in the year. Torrent Gas's proposed offering could add further momentum to India's recovering primary market while giving investors access to the country's expanding city gas distribution sector.
