Public sector general insurer Oriental Insurance Company is targeting a return to profitability in 2026-27, with proceeds from its NSE stake dilution through initial public offerings expected to significantly boost financial performance. According to reports from PTI, Chairman and Managing Director Sanjay Joshi stated that the company is targeting to make some profit this year, with the NSE IPO proceeds being booked as profit and expected to improve the company's financials while providing liquidity. The company plans to offer close to 49.57 lakh shares in this process, marking a key milestone for the insurer.
The company is diluting only a small portion of its holding in the National Stock Exchange through the upcoming IPO, with 49.57 lakh shares put on offer. As reported by PTI, Oriental Insurance Company currently holds 3.52 crore shares in NSE as of June 30, 2026, representing a 1.42% stake in the country's biggest bourse. At the upper price band of ₹1,785 per share, the company would realise ₹885 crore, while at the lower price band of ₹1,700 per unit, it would pocket about ₹843 crore.
The ₹22,569-crore IPO opens for subscription on September 17 and closes on September 21, making it the country's second-largest public issue after Hyundai Motor India's ₹27,870-crore offering in 2024. According to PTI, once the NSE listing is complete, Joshi indicated that the value of the remaining holding can be used to calculate the company's solvency, which is expected to improve the company's solvency ratio. The IPO comes nearly a decade after NSE's plans to go public were stalled amid regulatory hurdles, with the exchange set to make its market debut on September 24.
For the financial year ended March 2026, Oriental Insurance's gross premium crossed ₹20,000 crore, signifying growing trust from policyholders, intermediaries, and stakeholders. As reported by PTI, this achievement aligns with the government's broader objective of promoting financial inclusion and ensuring wider access to risk protection mechanisms. The growth has been driven by robust contributions from the Group Personal Accident (GPA), Health, Fire, and Motor insurance portfolios.
The company celebrated its 80th foundation day on September 12, 1947, less than a month after India gained independence. According to PTI, on this occasion, Oriental Insurance launched a range of innovative products and initiatives for its customers. The company was one of the initial investors in the National Stock Exchange Ltd, which was incorporated in 1992, and the upcoming NSE listing comes nearly a decade after the exchange's plans were stalled amid regulatory hurdles.
