Sun Pharmaceutical Industries shares closed 0.7% lower at ₹1,987 on the National Stock Exchange on Friday, July 31, after the company's Q1 FY27 results disappointed market expectations. The stock's recent decline reflects investor concerns over the company's inability to meet street estimates, particularly in the US market segment. As per Mint, the counter's performance reflects broader market sentiment toward pharmaceutical companies following quarterly results. A Bloomberg poll had pegged revenue at ₹15,527 crore and net profit at ₹2,974 crore, highlighting the gap between analyst expectations and actual performance.
Sun Pharmaceutical Industries believes it can sustain its gross margin above 80% even as pricing pressure persists in the US generics market, with management attributing the 80.5% gross margin reported in Q1 to a structural shift in product mix rather than one-off gains. Speaking during the earnings call, management emphasized that higher-margin branded generics and innovative medicines now account for a larger share of revenue, giving confidence that profitability can remain resilient. The company noted that these margin levels are sustainable even after adjusting for the impact of lenalidomide sales in the corresponding quarter last year. This strategic pivot toward specialty medicines and branded generics has structurally improved the company's profitability profile despite intensifying competition in traditional generics.
Sun Pharmaceutical Industries delivered strong Q1 FY27 results, with consolidated net profit attributable to owners rising 27.04% year-on-year to ₹2,894.79 crore from ₹2,278.63 crore, while revenue from operations increased 10.14% to ₹15,183.55 crore from ₹13,786.07 crore. Adjusted net profit rose 3.1% to ₹3,089 crore, showing the impact of one-time charges on reported figures. Revenue from operations grew 10% year-on-year to ₹15,299.8 crore according to the latest reports. Profit before exceptional items and tax rose 7.82% to ₹4,302.90 crore from ₹3,990.77 crore, while EBITDA grew 2.7% to ₹4,417.70 crore from ₹4,301.70 crore, though EBITDA margin contracted by 220 basis points to 28.9% from 31.1% in the corresponding quarter last year. Sun Pharma invested ₹826.4 crore in research and development during Q1FY27, accounting for 5.4% of total sales, as reported by Business Standard.
The company's US formulation sales came in at $427 million, declining 9.7% from $473 million in the previous year, marking a key disappointment for investors. This underperformance in the US market, which is a crucial revenue driver for Sun Pharma, contributed to the stock's decline from its day's highs. Despite the miss, the company launched five generic products in the US during the quarter and expects additional launches in the current quarter. The US market contributed approximately 26.6% to the company's total consolidated sales. As per Mint, emerging markets formulation sales rose 4.2% to $311 million, contributing 19.4% of total consolidated sales, while formulation sales in the Rest of the World stood at $218 million, accounting for 13.6% of consolidated sales.
The company's India formulations business delivered exceptional performance, with sales climbing 16% to ₹5,474.9 crore from ₹4,721.10 crore, accounting for 36.1% of consolidated revenue. Management attributed this growth to broad-based performance across therapy areas, expansion of the field force and strong prescription generation. As reported by Mint, the company attributed this growth to its cardiovascular, central nervous system, gastroenterology and orthopaedic portfolios. About half of the domestic growth came from higher volumes and new product launches, indicating market share gains rather than price-led expansion. Sun Pharma's market share improved to 8.5% from 8.2% according to the Pharmarack MAT June 2026 report, indicating continued outperformance versus the broader industry. Global innovative medicines sales increased 12.8% to $351 million from $311 million, accounting for 21.9% of sales, while emerging-markets formulations sales rose to $311 million from $298 million.
Management indicated during the first-quarter earnings call that growth would be led by established brands such as Ilumya, Cequa and Odomzo, alongside recently launched products Leqselvi and Unloxcyt. Leqselvi (deuruxolitinib) crossed 1,000 prescribers in June and recorded its strongest month since launch, while Unloxcyt (cosibelimab-ipdl) continues to secure formulary additions at cancer centres and integrated health systems. The innovative medicines portfolio grew 12.8% year-on-year to $351 million in the June quarter and now contributes nearly 22% of consolidated sales, reinforcing its growing importance in Sun Pharma's revenue mix. Sun has rapidly established itself as the number two generic semaglutide injector player in India and is the only company offering the drug through an auto-injector device. Regulatory approvals have been secured in South Africa and Brazil, with the South African launch already underway and the Brazil rollout expected shortly through a partner. The company is also evaluating additional indications for both Leqselvi and Unloxcyt.
Sun Pharma recorded exceptional charges of ₹204.09 crore during the quarter, comprising ₹167 crore in due-diligence, legal, filing and other costs related to the proposed Organon acquisition and ₹37.09 crore linked to the New Labour Codes. A related tax credit of ₹9.43 crore reduced the after-tax effect of these charges to ₹194.66 crore. In April, Sun Pharma agreed to acquire all outstanding Organon shares for $14 each in an all-cash transaction carrying an enterprise value of $11.75 billion, with Organon shareholders approving the transaction on July 23. The acquisition is on track to close in Q4 FY27, with regulatory filings completed across markets and approvals already received in some countries. Dilip Shanghvi, Sun Pharma chairman, stated that the deal remains on track for closure by early 2027, with an Integration Management Office already working on Day One preparedness. Management retained its full-year outlook, signalling a measured stance on the rest of FY27, with CFO Jayashree Satagopan maintaining the 'high single digit growth' guidance for the full year.
