Indian equity markets ended lower on Wednesday, August 26, with the Nifty falling 0.52% to 24,207.75 and the Sensex declining 0.24% to 77,472.94. According to ETMarkets, the benchmarks gave up early gains as sectoral divergence weighed on the indices. Despite the weakness in the benchmarks, market breadth favoured the bulls with 1,967 stocks advancing against 1,548 declines on the NSE. The Nifty Smallcap 100 rose 0.8% while the Nifty Midcap index slipped into the red, indicating mixed performance across market capitalizations. Among sectors, Nifty Realty and Nifty Consumer Durables indices fell around 1% each, while Nifty Metal and Nifty Private Bank indices gained more than 1% each.
Sunny Agarwal, Head-Fundamental Research, Retail Desk at SBI Securities, has outlined a specific approach for banking sector exposure. According to reports from CNBC TV18, Agarwal prefers mid-sized private banks and select public sector undertakings (PSUs) for banking sector investments. This strategy reflects a focus on smaller, more nimble private banks while maintaining exposure to the established PSU banking sector. The latest market performance shows Nifty Private Bank index gained more than 1%, supporting the sector's resilience amid broader market weakness and technical caution.
Agarwal maintains a bullish stance on power ancillaries, auto components and JTL Industries, as reported by CNBC TV18. This sector preference is driven by strong growth opportunities identified in these specific segments of the industrial and manufacturing sectors. The focus on power ancillaries suggests confidence in the power generation and transmission infrastructure sector, which continues to show strength in the current market environment.
According to LKP Securities, the Nifty formed a Dark Cloud Cover pattern on the daily timeframe, raising the possibility of a bearish move in the coming days. However, the broader trend remains positive as the index continues to trade within a rising channel. The index found support just above the 50 EMA today, indicating technical resilience. Technical analysts suggest that a fall below 24,130 could trigger a serious correction, potentially dragging Nifty towards 23,900 and 23,700, while a sustained move above 24,350 could change the current perception. As per Rupak De, Senior Technical Analyst at LKP Securities, "range-bound trading continues, with sellers emerging at higher levels."
According to CNBC TV18, Agarwal's investment approach emphasizes selective stock picking within the banking and industrial sectors. The strategy appears to focus on companies with strong fundamentals and growth prospects rather than broad market exposure. This selective approach aligns with the current market conditions and sector-specific opportunities identified by the research team, particularly as the market shows mixed performance across different sectors and technical caution prevails.
