The stock has eased around 6.13% in the last one month, underperforming the Nifty Energy index which has declined 2.18% during the same period. ICICI Securities has issued a 'buy' rating on JSW Energy with a target price of ₹700, maintaining an optimistic outlook despite Motilal Oswal Financial Services (MOFSL) downgrading the stock to Neutral. According to ICICI Securities's latest research report dated July 23, 2026, the brokerage remains bullish on the company's prospects despite the recent downgrade. The contrasting analyst views highlight the mixed market sentiment around JSW Energy's valuation, with ICICI Securities citing the company's healthy cash balance of ₹129 billion and strong execution capabilities. The ₹700 target price implies an upside of 25% from current levels, contrasting with MOFSL's revised target price of ₹550 that suggests a 2% downside. MOFSL's downgrade was driven by a 17% rally in the stock price over the last four months, which reduced valuation comfort, and a 9% cut to the FY28 EBITDA estimate due to expected slower renewable commissioning pace.
JSW Energy reported net profit falling 36% to ₹532 crore in Q1 FY27 against ₹835 crore in the same quarter of the last fiscal, as reported by MOFSL. Revenue during the first quarter of 2026-27 rose marginally to ₹5,437 crore compared with ₹5,411 crore a year earlier. The weak quarterly performance was attributed to operational challenges, with power sales declining 5% to 12.9 billion units (BUs) and thermal generation falling 6% to 8 BUs due to lower generation at its Mahanadi plant. Renewable energy generation also declined 3% to 4.8 BUs, driven by lower generation at hydro plants owing to weaker hydrology. However, ICICI Securities notes that the RE portfolio saw an 11% increase in generation led by capacity additions, providing some positive momentum despite the overall subdued performance. Despite the earnings miss, Citi maintains its positive outlook citing the company's strong fundamentals and growth trajectory, while Prabhudas Lilladher maintains its outperform rating with target price of ₹720. MOFSL reports that despite revenue being in line with expectations at ₹5,210 crore, the company's EBITDA of ₹2,870 crore was 13% above estimates, while adjusted net profit of ₹470 crore beat expectations by 89%.
Despite the weak quarter, JSW Energy management reiterated its growth outlook and highlighted that earnings were impacted by temporary operational disruptions. The company has already achieved over one-third of its 3 GW FY27 commissioning target with approximately 1.1 GW added till July 2026, as reported by Prabhudas Lilladher. Jefferies notes that the company added 1.1 GW capacity till date, which compares well with the FY27 expectation of 2.2 GW. The company maintains its FY30 target of 30 GW and reiterated its ₹200 billion FY27 capex guidance, achieving ₹40 billion in Q1FY27. According to ICICI Securities, the company strengthened its balance sheet by raising ₹40 billion via QIP to reduce its debt and fund capex, with net debt falling to ₹61,322 crore as of June 30, 2026. The debt-to-equity ratio improved to 1.7x versus 2.2x quarter-on-quarter, and Net Debt (excluding CWIP)/EBITDA ratio improved to 4.95x versus 5.2x QoQ, indicating enhanced financial health. JSW Energy's joint MD and CEO Sharad Mahendra told CNBC-TV18 that the company is on track for its 3 GW capacity addition and is confident of adding the entire FY26 capacity in the first half of FY27.
Despite operational challenges, JSW Energy demonstrated strong financial performance in Q1FY27. Renewable capacity additions remain on track, with 1.1 GW commissioned in FY27 year-to-date, supporting the management's guidance of adding a total of 3 GW in renewable capacity during FY27. Operational performance remained resilient despite lower Plant Load Factors (PLFs) in hydro (40%) and thermal (71%) segments. These lower figures were attributed to weaker hydrology, a planned outage at the Ratnagiri plant, and a 17-day transmission evacuation outage at KSK Mahanadi caused by extreme weather. MOFSL notes that the company's stake in JSW Steel is valued at a 25% discount to the current market price, acknowledging the strategic significance of this holding while incorporating a conservative valuation approach. The company successfully executed fund-raising initiatives totalling ₹10,150 crore through a preferential allotment (₹3,000 crore), a partial stake sale (₹3,150 crore), and a Qualified Institutional Placement (₹4,000 crore), helping bring leverage under control and strengthen the overall balance sheet.
The contrasting analyst views reflect different perspectives on JSW Energy's valuation and execution capabilities. As per MOFSL, the revised target price of ₹550 implies a 2% downside, prompting the downgrade to Neutral. Jefferies maintains a 'buy' rating with target price of ₹720 per share, indicating an upside of 28.2% from current levels. CLSA holds a 'hold' rating with target price of ₹549 per share, suggesting a downside of 2.2%. Of the 22 analysts covering JSW Energy, 14 have a 'buy' rating, three have a 'hold' rating and five have a'sell' rating. ICICI Securities maintains its 'buy' rating with unchanged target price of ₹700, citing the company's healthy cash balance of ₹129 billion that places it comfortably to fund its ₹200 billion capex for FY27 and beyond. The stock has jumped 5.81% in the last one year compared to a 2.87% slide in NIFTY and a 10.94% spurt in the Nifty Energy index. The PE of the stock is 112.17 based on TTM earnings ending June 26, reflecting the premium valuation despite recent performance challenges.
