Copper prices have reached near record high levels, creating significant opportunities for non-ferrous metal companies. According to an Aditya Birla Capital report, rising demand from essential industries and limited supply growth are expected to sustain long-term copper prices. The brokerage notes that a combination of limited new mine supply, rising strategic demand, and increasing focus on supply chain security is creating a commodity cycle different from traditional demand-led cycles. Combination factors including new demand avenues, limited mine development projects and delayed expansions are likely to push the copper market into a prolonged deficit, supporting elevated copper prices. Recent market data shows copper prices are up 36% over the last 12 months, heavily outpacing broader market indexes.
The Aditya Birla Capital report identifies specific non-ferrous equities positioned to benefit from the copper price rally. As reported by the brokerage, companies expected to benefit include Hindustan Copper, National Aluminium Company Limited (NALCO), Vedanta Aluminium Metal, Vedanta Limited, and Hindustan Zinc. The report states that non-ferrous equities are expected to benefit as the cycle broadens in scope, with these stocks having varying degrees of exposure to various industrial metals. The global metals and mining sector has seen sharp growth over recent years, and the brokerage believes the cycle remains in its early stages.
Recent trading data shows mixed performance among the recommended stocks. According to market reports, NALCO closed 2.38% lower at ₹334.15 per share on BSE with a market capitalization of ₹61,371.05 crore on Thursday, October 1. The stock has delivered strong returns of 55% in one year, 49% in two years, and 243% in three years. Hindustan Copper closed 2.28% lower at ₹461.95 per share with a market cap of ₹44,671.67 crore, delivering 37% returns in one year, 32% in two years, and 184% in three years. Vedanta Aluminium Metal closed 2.46% lower at ₹402.85 per share and has declined 10.87% in three months. Hindustan Zinc closed 1.49% lower at ₹556.85 per share with a 15.7% return in one year and 80% return in three years. Vedanta Limited closed 2.70% lower at ₹251.90 per share with strong three-year returns of 214%.
Experts predict a "transformative trajectory" for copper demand driven by artificial intelligence adoption and infrastructure growth. According to S&P Global research, AI companies are building massive data center infrastructure that requires substantial copper resources for electricity generation and transmission. The firm warns that "copper is essential for the generation, transmission, and use of electricity. But the demand for copper will outrun supply unless there is major adjustment across the copper supply system." AI adoption is fueling electrification needs that the current grid cannot support, creating a critical shortage of copper for electricity infrastructure development. This represents a new, rapidly expanding vector of copper demand that complements traditional industrial applications, making copper a strategic commodity for the digital economy. U.S. Global Investors estimates that large AI-focused data centers require up to 50,000 tons of copper, equivalent to more copper than found in 200,000 average homes.
Investors can gain exposure to copper through direct mining stocks like Freeport-McMoRan, which derives 75% of its revenue from copper and is the largest publicly traded copper mining company. Alternatively, copper ETFs offer diversified exposure, with the Global X Copper Miners ETF (NYSEMKT: COPX) holding more than $7 billion in assets and tracking the Solactive Global Copper Miners Total Return Index. However, JP Morgan research cautions that while copper prices remain elevated compared to historical averages, downside macroeconomic risks are largely not fully priced in, as demand for base metals is extremely sensitive to global economic growth. The market has already recognized the copper revolution, but current conditions may not provide the best entry point for long-term investors.
