Container Corporation of India Ltd. (CONCOR) shares gained momentum on Monday, June 22, after brokerage firm Jefferies reiterated its positive stance on the stock despite estimating a weak June quarter performance. According to reports from CNBC TV18, Jefferies maintains a 'buy' rating with a target price of ₹600 per share, implying an upside of over 27% from Friday's closing price of ₹471.75. CONCOR shares closed 0.51% higher at ₹473.95 on Monday, with the company's market capitalization standing at ₹36,096 crore. The global brokerage believes several structural factors could improve the company's earnings trajectory over the next few years, with the current valuation not adequately reflecting potential benefits from upcoming infrastructure developments.
As reported by CNBC TV18, CONCOR shares are currently trading just over 12% above their 52-week low of ₹421.45, seen on March 23 this year, while standing about 25% below the 52-week high of ₹634.56, which it hit in June 2025. The brokerage believes much of the negative sentiment is already reflected in the stock price, noting that CONCOR is currently trading at a valuation that is one standard deviation below its historical average. According to Jefferies, the stock has underperformed the Nifty by nearly 50% since June 2024, weighed down by weak growth in the container rail industry and the lack of progress on the government's divestment plans. The current valuation does not adequately reflect the potential benefits that could emerge from upcoming infrastructure developments, particularly the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor.
One of the biggest themes in the Jefferies investment case revolves around the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC). The dedicated freight network is expected to improve rail connectivity between key ports and inland logistics hubs, with the market not fully pricing in the possible benefits from WDFC connectivity to JNPT. According to Jefferies, rail market share largely depends on factors such as haulage charges imposed by Indian Railways, diesel prices and road infrastructure development. The brokerage noted that WDFC commissioning and initiatives such as Assured Transit Trains lend reliability, but sustained gains will depend on stable, competitive pricing. If policy measures remain supportive and pricing stays competitive, rail-based cargo movement could gradually recover market share, creating a positive backdrop for CONCOR's business.
According to Jefferies estimates reported by CNBC TV18, the brokerage expects a healthier growth phase over the next few years. CONCOR's export-import container volumes remained largely flat between FY19 and FY26 due to market-share losses and slower industry growth, but the brokerage now expects improvement. Jefferies estimates 10% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) in export-import volumes between FY26 and FY30, resulting in 16% EBITDA CAGR over the same period. The brokerage expects 16% FY26-30E EBITDA CAGR driven by 9% volume CAGR. Even in a bear-case scenario where WDFC benefits don't materialize, Jefferies estimates 13% EBITDA CAGR and values the stock at around ₹461 per share, indicating limited downside risk.
According to Jefferies estimates reported by CNBC TV18, the June quarter is expected to remain weak due to an industry-wide slowdown. The brokerage cited data showing Indian Railways container volumes declined 1% in May 2026 from last year despite strong port activity, while June volumes have so far fallen 6% from a year earlier amid disruptions linked to tensions in West Asia. However, it believes the weakness may prove temporary, as India's port container volumes grew 8% in May from the previous year, while containerisable export-import trade rose 20% despite tensions in West Asia. Jefferies expects the June 2026 quarter to remain soft as industry container volumes have declined around 5% year-on-year so far. Street sentiment on the stock remains mixed, with 13 of the 20 analysts covering CONCOR giving it a 'buy' rating, while the average analyst target price stands at ₹532.17, implying a potential upside of about 12.2% from current levels.
