
India is nearing completion of its first bullet train corridor, the Mumbai–Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR) project, which will provide a standardised template for upcoming bullet train corridors across the country. Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced on Saturday that the first operational section will be ready in 2027, with construction having crossed the 80% mark. The first service is expected to run in August 2027 with the initial section opening between Surat and Bilimora. The corridor covers approximately 508 kilometres and includes 12 planned stations. The project represents a significant milestone in India's high-speed rail infrastructure development, with the MAHSR expected to open in stages between August 15, 2027, and 2029. As per NHSRCL, the corridor has a design speed of 350 kmph with an operational speed of 320 kmph supported by advanced rolling stock, signalling and train control systems.
The MAHSR project will connect Mumbai to Ahmedabad in approximately 1 hour 58 minutes and features advanced technical specifications. The corridor is being developed using Japanese Shinkansen technology and operational practices and will introduce J-Slab ballastless track technology in India for the first time. This represents a significant improvement in travel time between the two major Indian cities, establishing India's high-speed rail capabilities. The infrastructure is designed for trains operating at 320 kmph with a design speed of 350 kmph, with standards drawing on both international best practices and Indian engineering requirements. The project will be supported by more than 20,000 overhead electrification masts using a 2×25 kV traction system, along with 12 traction substations, two depot traction substations and 16 distribution substations.
The government has implemented a standardised template approach based on the MAHSR project for future high-speed rail development, with NHSRCL now preparing the engineering base for later corridors. According to the latest consultancy tender, the selected consultant will be responsible for designs covering elevated viaducts, major bridges, underground stations, tunnels, depots, maintenance facilities, earth structures and station architecture. The consultancy scope includes three underground stations on the Chennai-Bengaluru corridor: Chennai, Whitefield and Byappanahalli, with Chennai and Byappanahalli planned as terminal stations each with six lines. The framework will establish engineering standards for bridge systems, tunnel cross-sections, seismic design, derailment containment systems, noise barriers, drainage, waterproofing, tunnel ventilation and emergency evacuation systems. Dedicated track construction bases are being set up to store rails, track slabs, machinery and equipment, while three rolling stock depots are under construction at Sabarmati and Surat in Gujarat, and Thane in Maharashtra.
The government has identified seven high-speed rail corridors, covering nearly 4,000 kilometres, for future development. According to the latest government announcement, the proposed network is expected to attract investments of around ₹16 lakh crore. The planned routes include the Delhi–Varanasi corridor with travel time of 3 hours 50 minutes, Varanasi–Patna–Siliguri with 2 hours 55 minutes, Chennai–Bengaluru with 1 hour 13 minutes, Bengaluru–Hyderabad with 2 hours, Chennai–Hyderabad with 2 hours 55 minutes, Mumbai–Pune with 48 minutes, and Pune–Hyderabad with 1 hour 55 minutes. As reported by The Times of India, the Union Budget 2026-27 announced seven new high-speed rail corridors with a combined length of around 4,000 km, with detailed project reports sanctioned for four corridors while surveys are continuing for the remaining routes.

According to the latest government statement reported by The Times of India, the project is establishing a scalable approach for future high-speed rail expansion that will enhance connectivity and reduce travel times. The foundation will help contribute to long-term economic growth through standardised approaches across future corridors, with unified designs, components, and maintenance procedures simplifying spare-part management, training, and procurement across the network. NHSRCL has also recently invited major rolling stock manufacturers to present their ability to design and build 350 kmph high-speed trains for India's future HSR corridors, reviewing their experience in propulsion, TCMS, mechanical systems, quality control, Make in India plans, manpower and compliance with national security norms. The government emphasised that the Mumbai-Ahmedabad project is expected to build the expertise and industrial ecosystem required for the future expansion of India's high-speed rail network.
