According to the latest report by the India Energy Storage Alliance (IESA) and Customized Energy Solutions (CES), this exponential growth is attributed to rising electricity tariffs, the need for reliable, high-quality power, rapid adoption of renewable energy, cost-optimisation demands, and India's ambitious decarbonisation goals. The study, titled 'India Stationary Storage Market for C&I Applications: Insights Till 2032', was formally presented at the 12th India Energy Storage Week (IESW) from July 8-10, 2026 at Yashobhoomi (IICC) in New Delhi. The findings detail how the market will increase from approximately 1 GWh in 2025 to 23-31 GWh by 2032, driven by supportive policy frameworks and technological advancements.
The study presents two distinct growth scenarios: a Business-as-Usual (BAU) path with energy storage systems reaching 22-23 GWh by 2032, and a Rapid Adoption (RA) scenario where market-friendly reforms and technological advances could propel installations to 31 GWh. According to the IESA statement, the BAU scenario assumes 5-6% annual C&I load growth and 15% renewable energy CAGR, while the RA scenario anticipates 18% renewable energy CAGR, reflecting the impact of supportive policy and falling battery costs. The report attributes this exponential growth to rising electricity tariffs, the need for reliable, high-quality power, rapid adoption of renewable energy, cost-optimisation demands, and India's ambitious decarbonisation goals. Primary drivers include rising grid electricity tariffs, demands for power reliability, rapid adoption of clean energy, and corporate decarbonization mandates.
The report encompasses comprehensive analysis of multiple storage technologies including lead acid, advanced lead acid, lithium-iron phosphate (LFP), nickel manganese cobalt (NMC), vanadium redox flow (VRFB), sodium-ion, and pumped hydro storage systems, with specific focus on LFP, NMC, VRFB, and Sodium-Ion chemistries. As reported by IESA, lithium iron phosphate batteries currently maintain a dominant share of the market, while vanadium redox flow and sodium-ion technologies are emerging as viable options for long-duration applications. The study explores the shift from backup-centric to application-driven energy storage, with tailored BESS solutions increasingly deployed for open access renewable energy projects, diesel generator replacements, and rooftop solar integration. Sen highlighted that the sector is at a pivotal moment, with insights from the report helping stakeholders shift from reactive power management to proactive energy leadership. Walimbe added that the study equips the industry with actionable intelligence needed to capture this historic opportunity, as commercial and industrial consumers are transitioning from using storage purely for emergency backup and peak shaving toward utilizing these systems as strategic assets for broader energy optimization.
