India is set to surpass Germany to become the third-largest wind energy producer globally by 2030, according to Joint Secretary in the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy Rajesh Kulhari. Speaking at the curtain raiser of Windenergy India 2026, Kulhari announced that India's current installed wind capacity of 58 GW positions it ahead of Brazil, while Germany maintains 77 GW. The country is on track to achieve more than 107 GW capacity by 2030, with China leading globally at nearly 700 GW and the US at over 160 GW. As per Kulhari, "We have surpassed Brazil this year. We are at 58 GW while Germany is currently at 77 GW; we are on track to surpass Germany before 2030 with more than 107 GW."
As reported by Kulhari, India's energy transition extends beyond adding megawatts to building a comprehensive industrial ecosystem. This includes creating skilled jobs, driving wind manufacturing exports, ensuring energy security, and reducing dependence on fossil fuels through system cost optimization. Dinesh Jagdale from Indian Wind Turbine Manufacturers Association (IWTMA) outlined the sector's growth trajectory, stating the path ahead includes 100 GW by 2030 and 155 GW by 2035, requiring collaboration between manufacturers, developers, policymakers, and innovators. Jagdale, who is also President of Corporate Affairs & Retail Business at Suzlon Energy, emphasized that achieving these benchmarks requires unified efforts among all stakeholders.
India's domestic wind turbine manufacturing capacity has demonstrated remarkable expansion, growing to 24 GW annually from 10 GW in 2014, with 70-80% domestic value addition. According to reports, wind equipment exports crossed ₹12,000 crore in FY2025-26, representing nearly 50% growth. The Ministry of New & Renewable Energy has launched WT-MARUT, India's first wind supply-chain portal, positioning the country as both a rapid-deployment market and global export hub. Suman Nag from Envision Energy India highlighted that this reflects a sector coming of age, stating "As we export-oriented companies continue to scale manufacturing and expand exports from India, we remain committed to strengthening the country's position as a global wind export hub and to contributing meaningfully to India's broader export ambition."
Windenergy India 2026, the country's flagship wind platform, is scheduled from 7-9 October 2026 at the Chennai Trade Centre. As reported, the event brings 20,000 attendees, 400 delegates and 350 exhibitors from 30 countries, with Suzlon India as Platinum Partner, Envision and Senvion as Gold Partners, Venwind and Renfra as Silver Partners. The event is organized by IWTMA and PDA Ventures, supported by the Ministry of Power and MNRE, featuring country pavilions from Germany, Denmark and Spain. This represents the 8th edition of the platform, positioning it as a key milestone in India's wind energy sector development.
