The Delhi government has announced plans to expand its ladies special bus service by adding approximately 50 buses under the PM e-Drive scheme. According to officials, the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) will operate 25 ladies special buses that will be student-centric U-special services, while the remaining 25 buses will serve Outer Delhi areas. As reported by officials, the transport department has identified specific areas for deployment, with work ongoing for other areas as well.
The expanded service will feature enhanced safety measures compared to previous ladies special bus operations. According to officials, the new buses will include more safety features specifically designed for women travellers. The government is also studying the usage of Saheli Pink Smart Cards and analyzing Pink tickets to determine corridors where demand for women-only services is particularly high. This data-driven approach aims to ensure the service is structured around areas with the highest utilization potential.
This expansion comes as part of Delhi's broader electric bus initiative. Earlier this month, the Delhi government launched 300 electric buses, bringing the total DTC fleet to nearly 6,600 buses, including 4,845 electric buses and 1,755 CNG buses. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has emphasized that the newly inducted buses are low-floor, air-conditioned vehicles designed to provide safe, comfortable and accessible travel for all passengers, including persons with disabilities.
The Delhi government has set ambitious targets for its public transport fleet expansion. As reported by officials, the government aims to build a modern fleet of around 14,000 buses by 2028-29. This expansion represents a significant increase from the current fleet size and reflects the administration's commitment to improving public transportation infrastructure across the city.
