The Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) has revamped its Document Number Verification System by making the subject matter of a Sebi letter a mandatory field for authentication. According to reports from The Economic Times and Business Standard, the upgraded system aligns with Sebi's E-Office format and enables recipients to verify physical letters, notices, and show-cause notices issued by the regulator. Sebi had originally launched this system in April 2025 and issued a press release on April 3, 2025, regarding its implementation. The latest changes are specifically designed to strengthen and increase the credibility of the authentication process.
Under the revamped system, recipients of Sebi letters can verify whether correspondence was issued by the regulator by validating their credentials and entering mandatory details. As reported by The Economic Times and Business Standard, these required fields include the outward number, name of the Sebi official issuing the letter, date of the letter, subject matter, and name of the recipient. Sebi has clarified that such verification does not constitute a verification of the contents of the letter itself, with the regulator emphasizing that the check is specifically designed to verify the origin of Sebi letters and notices.
The verification system operates on a confirmation basis, returning a message if correct details match Sebi's records. According to The Economic Times and Business Standard, if entered details do not match, the system indicates 'no record found' and advises the verifier to either enter correct details or seek confirmation by sending an email to dnvs@sebi.gov.in. The system covers all Sebi communications including letters, notices, and show-cause notices, with recipients including anyone acting on their behalf also having access to the verification process.
As reported by The Economic Times, the revamped Document Number Verification System became operational from September 2026. Sebi has clarified that any communication issued prior to this period may be verified by sending an email with necessary details to dnvs@sebi.gov.in. The system continues to be accessible on the home page of the Sebi website under 'Authenticate Document Number Issued by Sebi' with detailed guidance available on the same webpage.
