
Jansuraksha schemes like Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJJBY) and Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY) have settled claims worth ₹25,160 crore since their launch in 2015, according to Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. As reported by The Times of India, these flagship schemes were launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on May 9, 2015, with the aim to extend affordable financial protection to all, particularly the under-served and vulnerable sections of society. Speaking on the occasion, Sitharaman noted that PMJJBY has settled claims worth more than ₹21,500 crore for over 10.7 lakh families, while PMSBY has settled claims worth nearly ₹3,660 crore for over 1.84 lakh families. The three schemes have emerged as major pillars of affordable social security since their launch, with a particular focus on vulnerable and underserved sections while strengthening long-term financial resilience through wider insurance and pension access.
According to data on the 11th anniversaries of the Jan Suraksha Schemes, over 27 crore enrollments have been completed under PMJJBY, 58 crore under PMSBY, and 9 crore under Atal Pension Yojana (APY), as reported by The Times of India. As of April 30, 2026, the latest data shows PMJJBY has recorded 12.72 crore female enrollments and 8.09 crore enrollments from PMJDY account holders, while PMSBY has recorded 27.45 crore female enrollments and 19.30 crore enrollments from PMJDY account holders. The schemes have successfully shielded citizens against life's uncertainties and fostered long-term financial resilience by broadening the insurance and pension landscape.
Launched in 2015, PMJJBY offers life insurance cover for death due to any cause at an annual premium of ₹436. Eligible individuals between 18 and 50 years can enroll through participating banks or post offices, providing ₹2 lakh to the nominee in case of the subscriber's death. The scheme pays ₹2 lakh for accidental death or total disability and ₹1 lakh for partial disability. As of April 30, 2026, the scheme has recorded 12.72 crore female enrollments and 8.09 crore enrollments from PMJDY account holders, according to the finance ministry statement reported by The Times of India.
PMSBY offers accidental death and disability insurance to individuals aged 18 to 70 years at a nominal premium of ₹20 per annum. The scheme pays ₹2 lakh for accidental death or total disability and ₹1 lakh for partial disability. As of April 30, 2026, PMSBY has recorded 27.45 crore female enrollments and 19.30 crore enrollments from PMJDY account holders, as reported by The Times of India. Atal Pension Yojana aims to provide old-age income security to unorganised sector workers, guaranteeing a monthly pension of ₹1,000 to ₹5,000 after age 60, with over 9.04 crore enrollments by April 30, 2026, up from over 7.66 crore enrollments by April 2025. The scheme is administered by the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA) under the National Pension System (NPS) framework and is open to bank account holders aged 18 to 40 years who are not income tax payers.
Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary highlighted the impact of the online Jan Suraksha Portal, which enables citizens to enroll conveniently without visiting bank branches or post offices. According to The Times of India, the digitization of the claims process has ensured faster settlements, enabling timely support to bereaved families when they need it the most. Sitharaman expressed appreciation for all stakeholders, including field functionaries of banks and insurance companies, whose dedicated efforts have made these schemes a huge success. As she marked the 11th anniversary of the Jan Suraksha schemes, Sitharaman emphasized that these schemes have enabled affordable insurance and security to people and their achievements and salient features.
