The central government has released ₹10,021.42 crore to 12 States under the Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana-Gramin (PMAY-G) for FY 2026-27. Union Rural Development Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan announced the "mother sanction" on May 28 via video conference, calling it a key step toward the Centre's 'Housing for All' target by March 2029. This substantial financial allocation represents the first major rural housing disbursal of the new financial year and is designed to speed up construction and completion of pucca homes in villages. The funds will flow to state implementing agencies, which then credit instalments directly into beneficiaries' bank accounts through Aadhaar-based payments, linked with on-ground verification and geotagged photographs of each house. As per the Ministry of Rural Development, Secretary Rohit Kansal stated that significant cooperation has been received from the states in the effective implementation of PMAY-G, with this year's target set to construct three times more houses than last year. The latest sanction follows an earlier release of ₹11,121 crore for FY 27, taking the overall sanctioned support under the scheme to over ₹21,000 crore.
The 12 States receiving funds under PMAY-G include Assam, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Kerala, Punjab, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh. These states together account for a large share of the national rural housing backlog and were chosen based on demand, performance and pending targets in earlier years. According to the Rural Development Ministry, the first PMAY-G tranche covers states with the highest combined share of new sanctions, focusing on clearing large pending rural housing caseloads. The remaining states will receive coverage in remote and tribal blocks, with states showing faster progress in sanctioning houses, completing foundations and uploading geotagged photos being prioritised for subsequent releases within the year. The event was attended by Union Minister of State for Rural Development Dr. Chandra Shekhar Pemmasani, along with state ministers including Uttar Pradesh Rural Development Minister Shri Keshav Prasad Maurya and Rajasthan Minister Dr. Kirori Lal Meena.

As of March 31, 2026, approximately 4.15 crore houses had been allocated to states under PMAY-G Phases I and II, of which about 3.90 crore had been sanctioned and construction completed. However, lakhs of homes remain in various stages of construction across rural India, especially in high-migration and flood-prone districts. Against the target of 4.95 crore houses under the scheme, 3.91 crore houses have been approved so far and construction of more than 3.05 crore houses has been completed. Officials noted that several states have introduced initiatives such as helplines, grievance redressal systems, rainwater harvesting, self-help group livelihood programmes, and mason training schemes to accelerate implementation of the housing programme. States lagging in approvals for 2024-25 and 2025-26 must clear targets by June 30, 2026, or risk slower fund flows. Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan emphasized that housing construction is hampered where poor families lack land, urging states to take special initiatives to provide land and necessary assistance to such beneficiaries.
During the review, Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan highlighted that the objective of PMAY-G is not merely to construct houses but to provide integrated rural living infrastructure including roads, electricity, drinking water, LPG connections, and sanitation facilities. He noted that nearly 75 per cent of the sanctioned houses under PMAY-G are either registered in the name of women or under joint ownership, strengthening women's social and financial security in rural areas. The minister urged states to address land availability issues faced by poor households, expedite pending approvals, and ensure timely utilisation of funds. He also directed states lagging behind their 2024-25 and 2025-26 targets to complete approvals by June 30, 2026. PMAY-G, launched in 2016, is one of India's largest rural housing schemes aimed at replacing kutcha houses with pucca homes equipped with basic amenities. The scheme has been extended until March 2029 as part of the government's long-term rural housing expansion strategy.
