
The UK government has announced the expansion of its Global Talent Visa programme to include over 100 companies beyond the traditional universities and research institutes. According to reports from Reuters, this represents the first time companies will be eligible for the programme, which previously had more limited access. The expansion comes as the government seeks to capitalise on US President Donald Trump's immigration crackdown by making the UK more attractive to international talent. As announced on Thursday 6 August, the move will give more than 100 of the UK's most innovative companies the ability to support some of the world's best scientists and engineers to come to live and work in the UK, unlocking a wave of international talent. The government stated that making it easier to bring researchers to the country would help the clean energy, life sciences and AI sectors, as part of its drive to try to reindustrialise Britain. Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds emphasised that the expansion would strengthen the government's industrial strategy and Labour's plan to grow the UK economy over 10 years by focusing on high-growth industries such as AI.
The expansion extends beyond traditional research institutions to include eight high-growth sectors identified in the government's Modern Industrial Strategy: advanced manufacturing, digital and technologies, clean energy, life sciences, and the creative industries. The programme now covers the Future Technology Research and Innovation (FTRI) scheme, a UKRI-run scheme under the Government Authorised Exchange visa route that enables eligible UK companies to host international researchers, scientists, interns and technical specialists for research, training and work placements of up to two years. Through the £54 million Global Talent Fund, the government is helping to bring new research group leaders to the UK - driving breakthroughs in clean energy, life sciences and advanced technologies, with 18 leading researchers already brought to the UK so far. The government also announced plans to broaden another scheme which provides visas for companies working on critical technologies like quantum and engineering biology.
Among the 100+ companies now eligible for the fast-track visa programme are major UK corporations AstraZeneca Plc, Jaguar Land Rover, GSK, and ARM, along with fast-growing innovators including Added Value Solutions (AVS), Denroy Plastics, and Ffilm Cymru. These companies will be able to bring in workers on the accelerated visa route, positioning them to better compete for international talent amid the current global immigration landscape. The programme expansion represents a significant shift in UK immigration policy to support business growth across multiple sectors, with some sectors having complained that high visa costs and an inflexible immigration system were putting Britain at a competitive disadvantage. AI Minister Kanishka Narayan, who now attends Cabinet meetings, has been pushing for the expansion and suggested that reimbursements for visa fees should be offered to help attract talented migrants.
The expansion is designed to support the UK's Industrial Strategy by enabling innovative businesses to undertake cutting-edge R&D projects that support jobs for British workers. The changes build on a push by AI minister Kanishka Narayan to ramp up the country's leadership in technology, with the government taskforce on global talent, chaired by the Prime Minister's business adviser Varun Chandra, also looking to attract highly-skilled individuals to the UK. The Global Talent visa offers a cheaper and quicker route to enter the UK compared to other immigration pathways, providing fewer restrictions than other entry routes. The programme has already helped over 12,500 talented people from more than 130 countries build their research careers in Britain via the endorsed funder pathway, with the expansion expected to drive further skilled jobs and economic growth across every postcode in the UK. Research-intensive businesses can now use the visa pathway, which was previously mainly used by universities and research institutes.
